Fair, but not great.

Although it's a huge book, it only discusses basic topics that are only useful for amateurs who've never heard about facilities before. I don't recommend this book for professionals. I can't believe it was published by Association for Facilities Engineering. The only good side is that it covers a wide range of topics.

About the Author
Barbara Verkuilen began Zen practice in 1971 at the Zen Buddhist Temple of Chicago with Soyu Matsuoka Roshi. She then studied with Dainin Katagiri Roshi for 15 years. Following Katagiri Roshi's death in 1990, she continued her formal training with his Dharma heir, Shoken Winecoff, by whom she was ordained in 1997. Barbara and her husband Dale, also a Zen priest, co-founded the Midwest Soto Zen Community in 2001, based in Madison, Wisconsin. Barbara holds a BA in Education and a Masters Degree in Counseling and Guidance. She is also the author of Dokusan with Dogen: Timeless Lessons in Negotiating the Way.

The Tale of Bho Li - A Beautiful Gift in More Ways Than One

What a beautiful book...from the story to the illustrations--I enjoyed it immensely! As a budding young learner of all things Buddhism, I was eager to see just what each "student" would teach to Master Bho Li. I am reminded that people come into our lives for a reason to teach us that which we need to know/learn as we need to know/learn it...and the way the author interweaves the core ideas and principles of Buddhist thought and philosophy into a story that is accessible and engaging is creative and fresh. I've yet to see another author create a story as elegantly, masterfully, and prettily around "all things Buddhism" as Verkuilen does here. BRAVO!

I am ordering copies to give away to my clients, my life coach, my yogi, and a few dear friends. What a perfect gift for anyone who strives to live life consciously and purposefully.

This book is truly inspirational and provocative. Thank you to the author for sharing the gift of this story with the world!

Zen Master Bho Li....

There's a transcendent quality to 'The Tale of Zen Master Bho Li.' Every element that an author strives for is uniquely evident in this keepsake volume. On the surface it's a beautifully illustrated young adult book. At its heart it is a story that speaks to the enduring quality of the human spirit, and which speaks to all ages. It begins with an eight year old orphan who is saved by a bird (Firethroat!) and then raised by the 'Dangerous Granny' (Soyu Sei) who 'civilizes the feral child he'd become, without taming his wild heart.' The boy then trains under the Master Wu, and becomes his successor. The tale moves seamlessly through Bho Li's childhood and into his own life as an abbot--and subsequently, the lives of his students. You don't need to be a Buddhist to appreciate this story; it's a universal tale which addresses real life issues. It's sweet without being saccharine; it's profound without being didactic; and above all, it's honest, without being depressing. This is a book that will be a classic among readers fortunate enough to come under its spell!

Both enjoyable, and deep.

This story is touching, inspiring, and potent. It is obvious that a lot of effort went into its crafting. When I finished reading it for the first time, I felt the familiar bitter-sweet feeling I get when I finish a truly great book. Gratitude, and a kind of sadness at it's ending. I don't think I have ever felt this from a short story like this. I can not believe "how much" there is in so few words. By this I mean that the writing is very rich and every word speaks volumes. There is no fluff here. Immaculately distilled prose. There is a subtlety and richness to this story that is only accomplished by great writers. As you read this story, the whole world of Bho Li opens before you in vivid detail. You get as much from what is not said as what is said. A classic tale, masterfully realized, with fantastic illustrations. Highly recommended!

Professor Brutting received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Bayreuth in 1995 with a work on charge transport in one-dimensional charge-density wave systems. He then moved to the field of organic semiconductors where he could take part in the development of organic light-emitting devices for display applications. In 2003 he became Professor for Experimental Physics at the University of Augsburg. His current research activities include thin film growth, photophysics and electrical transport in organic semiconductor devices.

Chihaya Adachi, Kyushu University in Japan. Professor Adachi worked at Chitose Institute of Science and Technology until he joined the Center for Future Chemistry as a Professor. He is heading the Division for Optical Functional Materials which research activities on organic optical electronics range from the synthesis of organic semiconductor materials to the development of devices and the clarification of properties.

Russell J. Holmes is Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota. His research is primarily focused on the study of thin films and single crystals of organic materials. Russel Holmes is specifically interested in how these materials behave from a growth standpoint, the characterization of their optical and electrical properties, and their performance in optoelectronic devices.
