Linguist and anthropologist Shipley has produced a major anthology of myths and tales of the Maidu Indians of Northern California. Originally relayed by Hanc'ibyjim, the last great Maidu storyteller, to an American Museum of Natural History expedition in 1902-1903, the stories in this collection languished, all but forgotten until Shipley began their recovery in the 1980s. In his vibrant new translation, he has gone to great lengths to maintain the oral, theatrical quality of their original telling. Sensitively handled, the narratives take on an Homeric timbre. The centerpiece of the book is the creation myth in which Earthmaker sings the world into being. This is followed by a section of stories revolving around the trickster Coyote, present at creation and symbolizing at once negation and the human spirit. These are balanced by tales of numerous other beings. Shipley also provides a brief, helpful introduction to the Maidu people. He rejects romantic images that ultimately dehumanize Native Americans by turning them into icons. By culling a broad cross-section of myths, he supplies a full-scale picture of the Maidu as earthy, sensuous human beings.

In 1912, Roland B. Dixon published a dual Maidu/English edition of a large number of myths collected from the Maidu storyteller Hanc'ibyjim. Returning to the original Maidu transcriptions, Shipley offers this new and fresh translation, catching more of the drama and poetry of the myths than the original translation. The myths are divided into three sections: creation myths, in which Coyote and Earthmaker argue over the characteristics of the Earth and its inhabitants; the more familiar tales of Coyote; and tales of other beings. This is an important collection, advancing the cause of Native American literature. It will, however, appeal more to scholars and readers with some prior knowledge than to the novice.

An important document for its mythographical constructs.

Editor William Shipley has done a fine job of taking what must be the largest native-American story database (Maidu tribe) extant, and shown the tales in a favorable light for modern Mankind. One other triblet and a small scattering of surviving rancheria/reservation bands have materials of the quality of the Maidu, but no other California site Indian populations had the sheer volumes, NATIVE- VOICED, and available for posterity. This is a good thing and the trend should be adopted while there are still a few stories out there that might even have the NATIVE-NAMES in place, for the sake of children everywhere, and their parents who have yet to grow-up, I can think of few talemakers who have so cleverly placed Man' fate into the hands of his Maker, in such alarming/amazing ways!

This book covers all the major theories of addiction, as well as the major psychological and physiological results of substance abuse, including fetal alcohol syndrome. Social workers, therapists, drug and alcohol counselors.

About the Author
C. Aaron McNeece was a social work educator for 34 years, after working as a correctional social worker. He has conducted extensive research on both substance abuse and criminal justice issues. �He served for 10 years as the director of the Institute for Health and Human Services Research at Florida State University, where he was also the Walter W. Hudson Professor of Social Work and later, Dean of the College of Social Work. �He is currently Professor and Dean Emeritus.

Diana DiNitto is Cullen Trust Centennial Professor of Alcohol Studies and Education and Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas at Austin where she teaches courses in social welfare policy, alcohol and drug problems, research, and pedagogy. She has a MSW degree and a Ph.D. in government from Florida State University. She has worked in a detoxification center, halfway house, and outpatient chemical dependency treatment program. She is also coauthor of Chemical Dependency: A Systems Approach,�4th ed. (Pearson, Summer 2011) and Social Work: Issues and Opportunities in a Challenging Profession, 3rd ed. (Lyceum Books, 2008). Her research in on substance abuse, violence against women, and social welfare policy. Dr. DiNitto has served on the boards of the Council and Social Work Education, the Association of Medical Education and Research on Substance Abuse, and the Texas Research Society on Alcoholism. She currently chairs the NASW Press Book Committee. She has been a visiting professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Sydney (Australia). Recently she gave the Robert J. O’Leary Memorial Lecture at Ohio State University entitled “Ending America’s Ambivalence in the War on Drugs” and presented invited testimony on drug policy to the United States Sentencing Commission.

Earlier review of misprint are not reflective of text quality

As the publisher of this fine text, I find it necessary to state that the reviews of the earlier edition of the book are not related to the quality of the text. A printing error caused some pages to be out of place, and once we discovered the error, the misprinted books were destroyed at our warehouse. Unfortunately, some books had already shipped to the marketplace. We would have happily replaced the texts for these customers had they contacted us, and we also would have replaced Amazon's stock with correctly-printed texts. Wordy, but well-balanced and unbiased.

I was required to take this course in a masters level program and it is not my area of interest. That being said, this book did a great job of putting things in lay terms so it is easily understandable. I will say that is gets very "wordy" and draws things out more than necessary. It does not always flow well, switching without always giving notice from alcohol to drugs and back, leaving with the need to reread a few lines to make sure you are still on the same topic. I was impressed that it talked about alcohol, nicotine, and even caffeine as a drug. Further, it gave a very unbiased view on societally controversial topics such as marijuana use, simply sticking to the basic facts. Because of this, it did not put unfair weight to any given substance. Additionally, it breaks down abuse by ethnicities, geographic area, age, gender, and more. It is basically a well-rounded text book. It uses the addiction as a disease approach, and does not focus all of it's attention on 12-step programs, while giving them a fair review. It is rather long, but not the worse textbook I have ever read.

Review of: Crushing White: The SNIPER!

After some years of chess abstinence, this FIDE Master needs all the help he can get in updating his openings so he doesn't get "caught out" in the latest theory. What Grandmaster Henley does here is continue to weave the net of dynamic Black counter-play based on systems with 1...g6, 2...Bg7 and 3...c5. This first volume focues on White setups involving an early 1.e4 2.d4 or vice versa. This is exactly the type of cohesiveness my openings (especially as Black) lacked in my youth.

As advertised in the title "Crushing White" this book does admittedly have a bias towards achieving results with the Black pieces. Apparently his objective is to show that Black can play strategically sound chess, yet win games in dynamic style. The combination of 64 "Illustrative Games" have plenty of diagrams (over 800) and the "Game Recaps" to really allow you to focus on the key moments.

Worthy of being a pamphlet in it's own right, the "Sniper Manual" provides 30 pages of weapons used by Black players such as - Sniper Investment, Bishop Exchange, Bishop Relocation, Exchange sacrifices, and every piece sacrifice including several stunning Queen sacrifices! In addition, I think he really touches the heart of the typical Sniper middlegame play by showing and guiding us to examples of pawn play - d5 pawn break, e5 pawn break, the e5/d5 pawn duo etc and of course passed pawns.

I highly recommend this book for anyone serious about improving their play. With the combination of the Sniper Weapons Manual and the 64 Illustrative Games,
I think any chess player from USCF 1500 up will significantly improve their understanding of how to win chess games as Black with dynamic counterplay!

Better than I expected !!!

Due to the obligations and responsibilities of full time employment, and family life, it is very difficult for me to find time to keep up with "chess opening theory". However, I love to play chess and am very competitive in everything I do - especially when playing 5 minute or 3 minute chess on the internet.

I tink I may have really found the Holy Grail for my black openings with Grandmaster Henley's - "SNIPER! By building a whole black opening system around the kingside fianchetto, I feel I have a sound position no matter what setup White employs. Henley does a great job of dispelling the myth that only White is allowed to control the opening and win beautiful chess games.

While you do need to learn a few very simple, but important, variations (In the Theory Sections he guides you on which ones to focus on), the main attraction for me was the fact that by learning the "Sniper Manual" I have developed techniques that will - as he calls it - give me "An opening I can play for a lifetime" I am always in familiar territory and the themes are constantly recurring. I feel I'm getting an unfair competitive advantage in blitz games.

From a technical production point of view, I quite like the ease of reading with the figurine notation, highlighted main lines and plenty of diagrams. My only quibble might be from a editing technical point of view as the columns in the table of contents on the left margin are slightly off and there is no index in the back.

However, with 396 pages of top notch content I am willing to accept the trade-off as being well within my favor. In terms of market value, the only other Sniper book I am aware of (Everyman Press) is from 2010 and only 176 pages and more expensive.

I would highly recommend this book for any chess player from Class B (About 1600 USCF) upwards to master level. I can honestly say I'm a skeptic when it comes to most chess books. I've bought more paper weights than truly useful tomes and can say without reservation that this was much better than I expected.

I was looking for a new Black opening system a bit off the beaten track so I bit on GM Henley's Sniper. He seems like a nice enough guy from some of his videos on Youtube. I knew there was a volume 2 in the works. I could see from the "Look Inside" feature that the format wasn't the clearest. I had already done some work on the Accelerated Dragon, but was annoyed by all the anti-Sicilians people throw at you these days. (Karma, I guess, as I have played the Closed Sicilian for a long time.) The Sniper looked like a good way to get around some of those lines. The book has a lot of sales pitch in the first few pages and a very long and hard to follow table of contents. Turns out the table of contents substitutes (poorly) for an index of variations. At the end of the Introduction there is the very revealing "How to Use this book" section, where the author states, "I advise taking the variations you want to employ and store them as games in Chessbase, or other chess Software. As you play new games, win or lose, you should annotate them and store them to build your own personal opening repertoire." I don't mind doing some work checking evaluations and variations with Houdini, but isn't it the author's job to provide a repertoire in an opening manual? It is very difficult to think, "Hey, what does Ron recommend against such and such line?" and then look it up in the book. Also, as one reviewer has noted, some critical lines are given, but are well hidden in the body of the work, which is mostly illustrative games between nontitled players.

By it's very nature the kingside fianchetto can transpose to a lot of openings. Doesn't the fact that the author needs 3 volumes to cover the opening belie the claim of "easy to learn?" It's certainly not easy to say what's covered in each volume without an index of variations. Volume 1 examines transposition to Accelerated Dragon Sicilian (1e4 g6 2 d4 Bg7 3 Nf3 c5 4 Nc3 or 4 c4), the dubious Pterodactyl for Black 4 Nc3 Qa5, and looks at the, critical for White, 4 dc. I would recommend picking up Chess Openings for Black, Explained: A Complete Repertoire (Revised and Updated) for more complete coverage of the Accelerated Dragon, which seemed rather skimpy in CW:TS. OK, I'm a sucker, I admit I shelled out another $22 for volume 2 (wherein we learn there is a third volume in the works.) See my next review there.
