Well Written Book On The Role Of Tacit Knowledge And Explicit Textual Knowledge In Social Organisations

In investigating knowledge, to study the role of different kinds of knowledge in the modern corporation - or perhaps, say, government department - one is not interested so much in its ontological status or even its truth or falsity but on its social role how it is learnt and taught and how it changes form as the organisation develops over time ...

Much more solidly based in real companies and real psychology than, say, excessively Hegelian approaches such as the 'social construction of reality' one or even 'ratomorphic behaviourists' who are surprised when they're bitten by theory rejection: the rats bite back, because their conscious minds reject being interpreted in terms of how lab rats behave!

The Founding Text of the Knowledge-Creation School

This book has its origins in an article the two authors wrote for the Harvard Business Review in 1986 about new product development in Japanese companies. Rather than construct a complex theory, complete with flow charts and diagrams, they used a simple metaphor: developing a new product is more like a rugby game than a relay race. Under the relay approach, new-product development proceeds sequentially from phase to phase--concept development, feasibility testing, product design, development process, pilot production, and final production--with one group of functional specialists passing the baton to the next group. Under the rugby approach, the product development process emerges from the constant interaction of a multidisciplinary team whose members work together from start to finish. As in rugby, the ball gets passed within the team as it moves as a unit toward the goal.

Because project teams consist of members with varying functional specializations, the issue of learning was considered a key aspect of product development. The article focused on two dimensions of learning: across multiple levels (individual, group, and corporate) and across multiple functions. But although the authors devoted sections to cross-fertilization and transfer of learning, they didn't develop the epistemological dimension of learning, and their focus was more on the learning organization than on the knowledge-creating company. Japanese firms' reliance on trial and error and on learning by doing wasn't analyzed in terms of the prevalence of tacit knowledge and processes of organizational knowledge creation.

In their book, Nonaka and Takeuchi introduce a key distinction between two kinds of knowledge: explicit knowledge and tacit knowledge. Explicit knowledge can be expressed in words and numbers and shared in the form of data, scientific formulae, specifications, manuals, and the like. This kind of knowledge can be readily transmitted across individuals formally and systematically. Tacit knowledge, on the other hand, is highly personal and hard to formalize, making it difficult to communicate or share with others. Subjective insights, intuitions, and hunches fall into this category of knowledge. Difficult to verbalize, such tacit knowledge is deeply rooted in an individual's action and experience, as well as in the ideals, values, or emotions he or she embraces.

There are two dimensions to knowledge creation: epistemological and ontological. The epistemological level describes how knowledge is converted from one type into another through processes of socialization (from tacit knowledge to tacit knowledge), externalization (from tacit knowledge to explicit knowledge), combination (from explicit to explicit) and internalization (from explicit to tacit). The ontological level refers to the knowledge-creating entity: it includes individual, group, organizational, and interorganizational levels. A knowledge spiral emerges when the interaction between tacit and explicit knowledge is elevated dynamically from a lower ontological level to higher levels.

The authors believe that Japanese companies are especially good at realizing this exchange between tacit and explicit knowledge during the product development phase, and that there is a distinctively Japanese approach to knowledge creation. Epistemologically, Westerners tend to emphasize explicit knowledge and the Japanese tend to stress tacit knowledge. Ontologically, Westerners are more focused on individuals, while the Japanese are more group-oriented. These differences give rise to a wholly different view of the organization: not as a machine for processing information, but as a living organism. People in Japan emphasize the importance of learning from direct experience as well as through trial and error. Like a child learning to eat, walk, and talk, they learn with their minds and bodies. This tradition of emphasizing the oneness of body and mind has been a unique feature of Japanese thinking since the establishment of Zen Buddhism.

The Western philosophical tradition, culminating with Wittgenstein, stresses that "we cannot say what we cannot think". But through metaphors, analogies, and pictures, people put together what they know in new ways and begin to express what they know but cannot yet say. As Polanyi put it, "We can know more than we can tell". The concept of tacit knowledge focuses on highly subjective insights, intuitions, and hunches that are gained through practical experience. This messy knowledge can prove indispensable in elaborating new concepts. As the authors underscore, "Ambiguity can prove useful at times not only as a source of a new sense of direction, but also as a source of alternate meanings and a fresh way of thinking about things. In this respect, new knowledge is born out of chaos".

Another important contribution of this book is to highlight the importance of middle managers and the role they play in the knowledge-creation process. Middle managers serve as a bridge between the visionary ideals of the top and the often chaotic reality of everyday business. They synthesize the tacit knowledge of both front-line employees and senior executives, make it explicit, and incorporate it into new products and technologies. Their contribution points toward a model of management that is neither top-down nor bottom-up, but "middle-up-down". In this model, knowledge is engineered by middle managers, who are often leaders of a team or task force, through a spiral conversion process involving both the top and the front-line employees.

Coming from a rich research field that combines theoretical speculation and practical experience, this management book is unlike any other. In no other text you will find discussions on the philosophy of Descartes and Nishida juxtaposing figures depicting the mechanics of a disposable cartridge in a photocopier. The case studies are not just vignette illustrations reduced to their skeletal form, they are thick descriptions replete with technical specifications and biographical details of key participants. There are no laundry lists of implementable measures or mnemonics of keywords that conjure the image of an alphabet soup. Instead the theory is illustrated by rich diagrams and stories, emphasizing the role of pictures and metaphors in conveying knowledge in a non-verbal form. The Oxford University Press ought to be commended for bringing this volume, the first in a series, to the attention of a public that seldom gets management books worthy of a rereading.

Simple and easy to understand!!

This book describes the microprocessor in a language which is so very simple and easy to understand.We have this book as a text book for the course in Microprocessors at the New York Institute of Technology. This was my primary reason to buy the book but once i began reading through it I found out that the language and the examples the author has used to describe the architecture and the working of the 188EB, is very uncomplicated and simple and reading the book is so much fun. For graduate students like me this book will definetely prove to be useful in understanding the subject of embedded microprocessors.

Great Book!

The author is actually one of my professors at The State University of New York at StonyBrook Basically Every chapter has to be read at least three times to get a good understanding. This doesn't mean that this is a bad book, it just means that reading about embedded systems for the first time might confuse you. This is an excellent book! It is taught by an excellent professor! I would recommend taking a course in wihich you could design and build your own embedded systems in addition to this book. This book will give anyone who grasps it, a good foundation in embedded systems design.

Great Embedded Book

We use this book in the embedded systems design classes at the University of Wisconsin. I found it easy to read and had great example codes. There are some typos, and it doesn't cover everything, but it is a great beginner and reference book for the powerful 188EB chip.

About the Author
Eleonore Stump, Robert J. Henle Professor of Philosophy at St. Louis University has published widely in the areas of Medieval philosophy, philosophy of religion, and metaphysics. She is also the current president of the Society of Christian Philosophers.

Michael Murray, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Franklin and Marshall College, works primarily in contemporary philosophy of religion and in early modern philosophy. He is currently a fellow at the Institute for Research in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Excellent Collection of Essays

Philosophy of Religion: the Big Questions edited by Stump and Murray provides a collection of essays discussing a range of important questions pertaining to the philosophy of religion. The book examines issues such as the problem of evil, the hiddeness of God and the nature of God.

In general, I found the selection of essays to be well balanced and illuminating. The selections are successful in providing a brief but well-rounded discussion of the key issues. In particular the essays by Alvin Plantinga were outstanding. This book makes an excellent introduction to this field of study. My only criticism is that a couple of the selections could have been stronger. First, the essays by Swinburne are rather weak - there are better available. Second, the piece refuting the cosmological argument by Rowe is interesting, but a bit dated and begs a response in light of the tremendous amount of discussion that has occurred in this area of late. I think most folks who are familiar with this argument would agree that something from Bill Craig would be appropriate. This might have been a space issue, however,I sense Craig may have been excluded because of his association with US evangelicals - not a politically correct group in contemporary academia.

Overall this is the best anthology within the field of philosophy of religion that I have come across. I Highly recommend it to all readers interested in Philosophy of religion regardless of their subject matter knowledge.

In a phrase coined by Captain Arthur Connolly of the East India Company before he was beheaded in Bokhara for spying in 1842, a "Great Game" was played between Tsarist Russia and Victorian England for supremacy in Central Asia. At stake was the security of India, key to the wealth of the British Empire. When play began early in the 19th century, the frontiers of the two imperial powers lay two thousand miles apart, across vast deserts and almost impassable mountain ranges; by the end, only 20 miles separated the two rivals.

Peter Hopkirk, a former reporter for The Times of London with wide experience of the region, tells an extraordinary story of ambition, intrigue, and military adventure. His sensational narrative moves at breakneck pace, yet even as he paints his colorful characters--tribal chieftains, generals, spies, Queen Victoria herself--he skillfully provides a clear overview of the geographical and diplomatic framework. Half-mad Russian czar Paul I dispatched an invasion force to India in 1801. It was hastily recalled upon his assassination. But 70 years later a succession of ambitious czars had crushed the Muslim peoples of Central Asia, and confident St. Petersburg again cast a covetous eye southward on India. Fearing a Russian invasion, the British rulers of India sent English spies disguised as holy men to find out what the Russians were up to. In 1880, after bloody fighting, the British eradicated Russian influence in Afghanistan and established a buffer state. The Great Game, as the Anglo-Russian struggle in Central Asia was called, unfolds in Hopkirk's ( Setting the East Ablaze ) intricate narrative as an incredible tale of high adventure and political intrigue, conveyed here through the exploits of Cossacks, Muslim guerrillas, courageous travelers, spies, mapmakers and soldiers. The Great Game ended in 1907 with an Anglo-Russian pact, but as Hopkirk notes in a foreword, a new imperialist rivalry is underway in Central Asia, pitting the U.S. against Russia, Turkey, China and Iran. Sweeping and Engaging History of a Century of British and Russian Conflict over the Middle East

I’ve never read or studied a lot about the exploits and conflicts of the British Empire and Russian Tsars in the 19th century. But I am a fan of well written history and was intrigued by this era of conflict known as “The Great Game”. If there is a book out there that better tells the tale of the successes, failures and misadventures of the British and Russians over this century, I have a hard time imagining what it would be as Peter Hopkirk’s book by the same title is stellar. Hopkirk is a strong and accessible writer who cut his teeth as a journalist working extensively in the Middle East and then went on to write a handful of histories about noteworthy eras in that region. This book is sweeping in scale as it tells the far ranging and extensive conflict between Russia and Britain, primarily a cold war that occasionally turned hot, as they vied for influence in the areas between Russia and India. The English primarily worried about defending their profitable colony, India, from Russian conquest. The Russians were primarily interested in extending their influence south into the Middle East to expand trade and also pushing toward Constantinople and access to the Mediterranean. Hopkirk excels at veering between the very specific stories of individuals who “played the great game” and then how their actions helped shape the more strategic actions and decisions of the two governments. Hopkirk also skillfully navigates the twisting tides as changes in leadership and influence in both governments shaped The Great Game. All of the detailed exploits of the many individuals are thrilling and enthralling. The hardships that many faced; whether scorching deserts, mountainous snowy passes, or duplicitous counterparties; are inspiring and amazing in their intensity. Although told more from the British point of view, Hopkirk gives an honest reading of the actions and motivations of the English but also does so with the Russians. In addition, he shows great insight and perspective on the various natives that are equal players of the great game. There are numerous Shahs and Emirs and others that had a significant impact on The Great Game, some for the good and some for the worse. Throughout the story there are many stories of heroism and sadism that give the tales dramatic punch and Hopkirk deftly handles all of these. As I worked my way through this sweeping tale, I kept thinking about the current state of relations throughout the Middle East and about some of the recent dealings with Russia. There are numerous lessons to be gleamed from The Great Game for our current relations with many countries in the Middle East and around the world and for that matter our own perspective on American influence. I won’t take the time to detail the ones that I gleamed from the book but offer that if you embrace this book you will find a very enjoyable read but also come away from it with a better perspective on some of the issues our nation faces today.

More fun than anything I've read for a while. The history of Russian expansion in Central Asia during the 19th century and the resulting conflict with Britain. If you've ever wondered how Kazakhstan became part of the Soviet Union then this book will give you the answer. Along the way you'll be introduced to some of the bravest, toughest and occasionally unluckiest men who ever served her Majesty. I couldn't put it down.

"The Great Game", by Peter Hopkirk, is one of the most enjoyable, educational and fascinating books I've read in a long, long time. I enjoyed it so much that I'll likely be reading the remainder of Hopkirk's tomes over the next few years (of which there are quite a few). This has been on my reading list for a long time, but I wish I read it long ago. "The Great Game" is essentially a spy story played out on the Central Asia/South Asia continental area over the course of an entire century between the Russian and British Empires. It reads like the best of Cold War spy fiction. Indeed, the Great Game was the Cold War of the 19th Century - one that very few people are familiar with today, but which still echoes in importance with the current situation in Afghanistan. It is the story of many different men from both Britain and Russia, explorers and adventurers all. The overall theme is the conflict between the two Empires as they merged closer and closer to each other in Central Asia, each constantly alarmed by the moves of the other. The micro-theme, played out in each chapter, is the story of individuals who played the Great Game. Their stories are remarkable. While the book could have used more maps to follow the little known geography, I simply recommend an Atlas of Central Asia to accompany the read. I cannot recommend this book enough. You will not be disappointed!

La obra también permite al lector conocer el software utilizado actualmente para tratar los datos y obtener resultados, con lo que se presenta el STATA, programa principal hoy en día en detrimento del SAS o SPSS que es el que se venía utilizando hasta hace unos años. Por ello, uno de los valores diferenciales de la obra es que integra plenamente los contenidos teóricos con el software más divulgado. Se describen de forma pormenorizada todos los métodos estadísticos bivariantes, pero también se da una visión general de las principales técnicas multivariantes  y del análisis de supervivencia. Es una tendencia totalmente demostrada que tanto revistas internacionales de prestigio como The Lancet, The New England Journal of Medicine o nacionales como Medicina Clínica, publican estudios clínicos de carácter multivariante. Otro elemento a destacar del texto es la gran abundancia de ejercicios y preguntas que se presentan a lo largo de los diferentes capítulos. Así, al final de cada uno de ellos, se ofrecen aprox. un total de 30 cuestiones y 10 problemas de aplicación directa de los principios teóricos explicados. Asimismo, en el mismo capítulo se dan las soluciones a cada una de las preguntas con su correspondiente razonamiento. De esa forma, el libro contiene aprox. más de 300 cuestiones y más de 100 ejercicios, todos ellos plantean situaciones relativas al contexto sanitario.

Texto muy práctico que facilita conocer los principales métodos estadísticos aplicados al contexto biomédico para poder interpretar adecuadamente los resultados obtenidos tras los diferentes estudios clínicos y formular conclusiones.

Aborda tanto la bioestadística descriptiva como la bioestadística analítica o inferencial y permite conocer el software utilizado actualmente para tratar los datos y obtener resultados, el STATA, programa que ha sustituido al SAS o SPSS.

Presenta detalladamente todos los métodos estadísticos bivariantes, pero también se da una visión general de las principales técnicas multivariantes y del análisis de supervivencia.

Ofrece una gran abundancia de ejercicios y preguntas que se presentan a lo largo de los diferentes capítulos, todos ellos relativos al contexto sanitario.

A great new series!

I had just started another book when I got Ryk's email about this new series, several seconds later I downloaded Fall of the Core. If you are a fan of The Frontiers Saga you are going to love this! If you never heard of the Frontiers Saga you are going to love this! In the FS we find earth just starting to recover from the virus when they find the Ark which has technology that was lost after the virus it was never explained too much about the virus but now we'll find out. As usual Ryk leaves us on the edge of our seats wanting to know what comes next! A great short fast read leaves you wanting to fire off emails urging him to write faster! I try really hard not to pay attention to the 3 month (sometimes more) period between books but it was such a joy to get this email and find out we are going to be able to read two connected series! Do yourself a favor and spend the 99 cents (or get it free if you are an unlimited subscriber).

Brilliant addition to the Frontiers Saga

Wow!!!! I have read all the books thus far in the Frontiers Saga and like so many readers I have been very curious about the Bio-Digital plague and its origins. Fall of the Core: Netcast Zero goes a long way to answering my curiosity. As usual Ryk Brown has written a well-developed plot-line that bridges and enhances our knowledge and history of the Frontiers Saga. Fall of the Core is set during the time the Bio-Digital plague first manifests amongst Earth's population with journalist Hanna Bohl being one of the first to make a connection between the Kalaria plague and the Twister computer virus. As usual Brown has written a thoroughly engrossing story with great characters, a slice of drama and action and my one gripe is: I wish the next part was already out!!!!!!

First story of Frontier saga prequels

I have a confession to make, I am a back story freak. When Ryk announced he was going to write about the time 900 years before the Frontiers saga I was definitely intrigued. Ryk's effort in this endeavor was very good, I'd give it a 4 1/2 star rating (rounded up to 5). The story opens with the focus on 2 freelance news people and is somewhat slow to start with. Once you've reached the interview with a doctor it picks up speed. Several questions about the series are answered but a host of other questions are raised. Long time Frontier readers should greatly appreciate this and it is readable and enjoyable for someone who's never read books 1 to 13. It is on the short side but well worth the price. I can't wait for the next one to come out.

I really appreciate the detail of the book. It's one of the few books on BI that I have read with such thorough explanations. HOWEVER, the translation from German is extremely poor!!! I can speak German and could see that at places the text has been translated literally: with the verbs at the end of the sentence, which is typical for German. Very disappointing and also very annoying! At places you need to know prior knowledge of the subject to grasp the meaning, it's that bad! Recommend it only to people who already know BI pretty well. If it wasn't for the translation, I would give it 4.5 stars(although not technically possible), as Authorizations/Security and Data Mining part/APD are totally missing, as well as most of Reporting (for which i highly recommend Peter Jones' SAP Business Information Warehouse Reporting). For those going for SAP certification: this book, Jones' and help.sap.com for Security and APD is more than enough (that is if you dont have certification materials, which arent that good anyway). Hope that helps!

Best book for Backend (Data Staging and Modelling)

This book is exclusively about the SAP BW backend, i.e. no reporting. As another reviewer has already stated Peter Jones' book is the best for the front end.
This book covers all the important topics regarding data modelling, staging, including quite a lot about improving the performance. The amount of useful detail is impressive. It is very practical, i.e. solution oriented. You can often use the explainations to solve your immediate problems. It is true that the English translation has been conducted poorly. But after having read some other books (Eggert) I think 5 stars are well deserved.

A very human love story

People who follow Meyerhofer's writing have come to expect it to be authentic, insightful and urbane. They may not have previously expected blue aliens - but happily, some things translate, and this romp of a book is him at his best. This is a love story - on its face, a sexy, irreverent, unbelievably bizarre love story about a blue alien with Asian features and the ability to teleport who falls in love with a Jewish therapist in Battery Park City. Look past the alien skin and it's a very human story; Meyerhofer writes sensitively and lovingly about some of the best and hardest things about human experience, from the fallibility of our heroes (and therapists) to the pains and joys of family life. It's laugh-out-loud funny (the book is worth buying for the first few pages alone), smart, and intensely enjoyable.

While this obviously isn't a book that takes itself too seriously, there's a lot to treasure in its ideas. Everyone struggles, people who are otherwise completely foreign to each other have more in common than not, and there's hope of a full, loving life even for the grumpiest and most self-critical of us. In short, this was better than a book about a gay blue alien had any right to be. Buy it.

Chosen by another life form

This narrative is a positive approach to the probability of life outside our universe with lots of humor in the situations during the dating period. Although the tale demands some suspension of disbelief the author is able to entice the reader into staying with the narrative until it totally absorbs the reader who no longer questions. One finds oneself so caught up in the plot which has become the reader's story as well that shear joy in the possibilities take over.

Delightful

What a fine piece of literary indulgence this is! Bless Will Meyerhofer for not taking himself too seriously, and in turn making us all feel a little less alone in our bizarre thoughts and indulgences. This book is a comical delight, while at the same time an endearing look at the ubiquitous nature of love and our desire to be accepted.
