The Book: Playing the Percentages in Baseball, by Tom Tango, Mitchel Lichtman, Andrew Dolphin

Written by three esteemed baseball statisticians, The Book continues where the legendary Bill James’s Baseball Abstracts and Palmer and Thorn’s The Hidden Game of Baseball left off more than twenty years ago. Continuing in the grand tradition of sabermetrics, the authors provide a revolutionary way to think about baseball with principles that can be applied at every level, from high school to the major leagues.

Tom Tango, Mitchel Lichtman, and Andrew Dolphin cover topics such as batting and pitching matchups, platooning, the benefits and risks of intentional walks and sacrifices, the legitimacy of alleged “clutch” hitters, and many of baseball’s other theories on hitting, fielding, pitching, and even baserunning. They analyze when a strategy is a good idea and when it’s a bad idea, and how to more closely watch the “inside” game of baseball.

Whenever you hear an announcer talk about the “unwritten rule” or say that so-and-so is going “by the book” in bringing in a situational substitute, The Book reviews the facts and determines what the real case is. If you want to know what the folks in baseball should be doing, find out in The Book.

The best book of its kind - by far!
By King Yao
Other sabermetric books have been written in the last few years, The Book is the best one by far. It is chock full of information, results from research and answers a lot of interesting baseball questions. The three authors, Tom Tango, Mitchel Lichtman and Andrew Dolphin have academic backgrounds and work for major league teams as employees or consultants. They use statistical methods to extract and comprehend information from a massive database of baseball games.

For the layman, there may be too much math throughout the book. However, they do a fantastic job of summarizing each idea in plain English at the end of each section. For example, in chapter 2 on hot and cold streaks, after presenting data, explaining their process and interpreting results, they summarize the section with "Knowing that a hitter has been in or is in the midset of a hot or cold streak has little predictive value. Always assume that a player will hit at his projected norm (adjusted for the park, weather, and pitcher he is facing), regardless of how he has performed in the very recent past. A player's recent history may be used as a tiebreaker."

Managers, players, fans and the media often put too much emphasis on results from small samples sizes. The authors warn against making this mistake. "One of the pervasive themes of this book is the danger of inferring too much from too little by underestimating the influence of randomness". For example, they summarize a section on pitcher-batter matchups with: "Knowing a player will face a particular opponent, and given the choice between that player's 1,500 PA (plate appearances) over the past three years against the rest of the league or twenty-five PA against that particular opponent, look at the 1,500 PA. "

They aren't afraid to point out when general baseball wisdom is correct. On starting pitchers, they write, "pitchers perform best with five days of rest, and worst with three days of rest. To manage our entire starting rotation effectively, four days of rest seems to be the optimal point. The current MLB pattern of scheduling the starting rotation works."

This book is at the top of my recommendation list for thinking baseball fans. I'm a bit surprised that I'm the first reviewer of this book on Amazon, since it has been out for three months. The sales ranking (currently #47,000 as I write this review) is disappointing for such an incredible book. The Book deserves to be at the top of the baseball best seller's list.

Authors Illuminate the Guts of Baseball
By Jeffrey Angus
This is the single most important math-centered analysis of baseball since The Hidden Game of Baseball came out over 20 years ago. I unreservedly recommend it for those already experienced with statistical analysis of baseball (the authors are much better at insight and explaining to the initiated than they are the Dick & Jane bits).

They attack a sequence of important subjects, mostly around game-tactics and, by consequence, roster-construction with hard data. And they are aware of an important bit of knowledge: (a) that not everything is measurable, and (b) that some aspects of the not measurable are important.

One star short of maximum because it's not a page-turner for most readers; the writing is more than adequate, but not energizing, so it's a book most will pick up, read 15 pages, put down to digest.

I'm very glad I read it. This is a keeper even for a limited-shelf-space baseball reader; I'm squeezing it in right next to "Hidden Game".

Good read, terrible publishing
By Arturo M. Perez
Let me start off by saying the book has very interesting information. However, the publishing part of it was very poor. There are grammatical errors, typos, missing spaces, etc. I am not sure if I got a preliminary version or what but it is just awful.

The book does miss a key idea on the bunting chapter. It does not differentiate between sac bunts and bunts for base hits. Some of the information is a little redundant. I recommend "Baseball Between the Numbers" if you want to keep reading about interesting baseball stats.

Also, the information on this book is a little outdated. It would be interesting to see "The Book 2" or something with more recent numbers

Fourth Trip to Nicaragua. I CANNOT recommend this book.
By Cire Gastav
I've been backpack traveling for 20 years and this was my fourth trip to Nicaragua. It's a great adventure and still very authentic.

Decided to get this book, since it was just released. Years ago, the LP books were just great. Gave you insight to all of the interesting nooks and cranny's of your destination country and gave lots of accurate travel and lodging information.

That has steadily gone down hill and this has got to be the worst. I'm pretty sure these people never even visited some of these places - or they sent someone else or it had been visited years ago.

Many of the facts [bus times, boat times, boat types, etc) are just wrong - and I'm talking about things that haven't changed since my first trip in 2006!

The book doesn't even highlight or provide information on some of the best activities - I mean some really cool things to do - it's not even in the book. Doesn't make sense.

Even the top 10 destinations are poorly covered. Take Vulcan Masaya - listed in the front on its own page as one the top things to do.

Terrible. Everything from correct information about the "parrots" at night, lack of information about the lava tunnels, vague information on how to walk to the top (books says "it's a long hot walk"....Come on, give me some facts, it's 3 miles and 2000 ft elevation change and will take you 1.25 hrs on average), lacking transport information on how to hop on buses that pass every 2 minutes that will take you there for $0.25 from Masaya [or even Granada]

And the reviews of the hotels / places to stay are TERRIBLY wrong.

For example, we stayed at place not so highly rated by LP at Laguna de Apoyo. Well, that SAME place was rated a nearly perfect score on Trip Advisor AND voted BEST place to stay at Apoyo. So, How was the place? AWESOME. We extended out stay there twice. It was really good.

At the beach town of San Juan del Sur, there's a beach shuttle from one of the hostels. The time of shuttles are on this home made wooden sign hanging high above. It's the same sign from before 2006. The times in the book are wrong! Thank god that we had so little faith in the book we decided to stop by early and check the time. If we hadn't we would have missed the only ride out to the awesome beaches on our last day. Unbelievable.

I can go on and on. I cannot recommend this book.

Why two stars vs one. Well if you had nothing or this book, it's still worth having. Only if you have no other choices.

It really should be one star.

disappointing format changes
By Diane C Rydrych
It seems that Lonely Planet has revised their format, and I don't like it as much as the old one. There's a lot less information - fewer lodging options listed, activities are described very briefly and in a way that's just kind of generic, the tone is a little more....flippant. There also are hardly any pictures anymore. The book is about half the size of what I was expecting, and I didn't find much at all that was helpful compared to previous LP books that I've used for other countries. I've always been a HUGE fan of LP, but in this case I thought the Moon guide was more useful. It just feels like they're trying to trim it, maybe turn it into something that will be primarily an online resource, so they pulled out a lot of content. It feels thin, literally and content-wise.

In Nicaragua, you do need a travel guide
By rachmilievitch
If you're visiting Nicaragua, you need a travel guide, and you need the newest available information, especially in Nicaragua since things are constantly changing--a two or three year old travel guide is essentially useless. And this guide does work. That said, it looks to me that the writers more or less just banged out this guide without doing the amount of work on the ground we users have a right to expect. My recent experience was that sometimes the hotel or restaurant or museum may not be located where they say it is, could be closed forever, could be a block or so away. The accommodations could be a lot less than described. And so on.

Guys, next edition, spend a little more time checking your maps, checking out the rooms and facilities, checking out new options, etc.

My experience using this edition was in the Northern Highlands. Perhaps a better job was done in other regions.

I love this little book
By spumonidoesntlooklikethis
I actually use this book often. I'm glad I bought it. Even though it is very short, it has quite a bit of information listed in a sections that make it very easy to look up what you need in a timely manner. I wish they had it in hardcover though. I have the paperback and likely will have to reinforce the cover because I find it so useful that the corners will likely be dog-eared before long.

If you can play chess, this book is for you.
By Dr. James C. Hunt
This is my first review of a book at Amazon, but I was moved to write because this book does not deserve the three star rating given by the only other reviewer. While it is true that (until recently) this was the only book in English about Shogi, it is in my opinion a much better introduction than most beginning books on chess. Trevor starts with the rules of chess, and quickly converts that knowledge into how the pieces move in Shogi, adding info where needed. Then he offers an (admittedly brief) introduction to two different opening styles (like King's pawn vs Queen's pawn openings if you will). He uses the game with mistakes as an illustration because, as a beginner, one learns more from mistakes than from flawless master-level play. I have lived in Japan now for four years and have had ample opportunity to see such high-level play -- it baffles me. Still, with this book, I have turned my chess skills into a moderate level Shogi game. I've even won a few games against some friends. In the end, this book hooked me on Shogi. It is a great game, and this book does much to take you from beginner to moderate player (I recommend a computer game to help you learn too)

A Good Introduction to a Challenging Game
By George R Dekle
The Japanese play Chess as enthusiastically as we play golf, but Japanese Chess, or Shogi, is quite unlike Chess. At first glance, Shogi bears no resemblance whatsoever to Chess. The 9x9 board is uncheckered and is marked with dots similar to those on a Go board. The pieces look like little pentagonal arrowheads or wedges, and enemy pieces are distinguished, not by color, but by the direction in which they point. Probably the most intimidating aspect of Shogi is that the pieces' ranks are displayed in Japanese hieroglyphics. The pieces' ranks appear in black on one side, and their promoted value in red on the other side. The pieces are really quite easy to learn, and although Westernized sets abound, the game loses some of its charm when played with pieces marked with English initials and arrows indicating the movement of the pieces.
For almost twenty years, until the publication of John Fairbairn's "Shogi for Beginners," this book served as the only English language introduction to the game. Fairbairn's book is more thorough and gives deeper insight into the game, but Fairbairn's diagrams are in Japanese hieroglyphics. Legget's book uses Westernized symbols which are easier to decipher. Leggett's book also has this advantage over Fairbairn's: It comes with a cardboard punchout Shogi set.
Thus, Fairbairn's book gives better instruction, but Leggett's is more user-friendly.

Brief but helpful intro to Shogi
By Doug M
I have been playing shogi with some friends for a little while, but I really wanted to brush up on my skills and try to develop more advanced techniques. Having read this book, I feel like a more confident shogi player. Mr. Leggett walks through the basics of shogi pieces, with the focus on how to effect mate with those pieces. Then dropping pieces is introduced. From there, Mr. Leggett works the player through basic strategy before showing championship games and the strategies used there.

As an introduction to shogi, I think this book is a good effort, but is somewhat rough around the edges. The does pretty well in walking through the very basics, but starts to jump into advanced strategy without covering mid-level strategy much. Mr. Leggett has many useful mottos and pointers to keep in mind (you need X number of pieces to drop to effect mate, Y number if you have pieces promoted), and some of these have been helpful with my own gameplay. In addition, the basic pointers on how to mate an opponent have actually helped me to win games since reading this book.

My only complaint (hence the 4 stars) is the focus on specific games, and not enough examples of general strategy. Also the length of the book is somewhat brief. I feel that each section could use some more expansion, particularly the later sections.

In any case, I think this is a fine book, and a good read for anyone whose new to shogi, or wants to brush up on their skills. I think this book is good for rounding out one's knowledge of shogi.
