In the mountainous cradle of one of the world's least known and most isolated civilizations, many of the foods that are found on Western fields and dinner tables are cultivated and invented here in an enduring quest for survival. In a context where poverty, conflicts and political upheaval have made it difficult and often dangerous for people to express and define their identity, food becomes a powerful tool for its survival.

About the Author
Frederik van Oudenhoven is an ethnobiologist who works with smallholder farmers and indigenous communities around the defence of traditional food and agricultural practices. Jamila Haider is a sustainability researcher at the Stockholm Resilience Centre looking at locally appropriate development in areas of high agricultural and cultural diversity. Frederik and Jamila both worked in the Pamir Mountains for several years, before meeting over a bowl of apricot soup in the village of Darmorakht.

The BBC had a beautiful story about this book published on July 26, 2016: "The secret food of Afghanistan". In May 2016 it won the Best Cookbook Of The Year at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards. Really amazing images and 3-language text.
