Naked soldiers caught naked

This book is chock full of soldiers bare-assed or frontally naked. The men in the photos are shown in the shower, at a beach, on their bunks, etc. It is casual nudity of men living and working together. There are several pictures of naked men at play, such as one man sitting on another's shoulders in a lake. These are men, who were comfortable with one another without homophobia coming into play. It was innocent camaraderie without it being sexual. A lot of men would not like the thought of one guy's bare balls resting on his shoulder. These are average guys in the army caught exposing themselves in real-life situations. Not all of the guys are hunks, but they are all beautiful.

Beautiful photography book that is well worth the purchase price!

Great photography book! IF you were to judge a book by the cover, this one would be the winner. Beautiful cover, nice pictures, good historical commentary. Just an all around great book. I collect photography books and this is one of my new top favorites. It is also more reasonable in price than many photography books that are not as good. If you are interested in the male form or history, this is the book for you. The pictures give the viewer a peak of men in a natural, uncensored way, during a time of their sexual awakening and innocence without social labels. It is refreshing to see pictures that are not posed, or touched up like most contemporary photography books (especially gay male erotica). This book has value for its historical, as well as photographic images.

Rare view of WWII presented with quality and finesse.

Wow, so interesting and great that these were published. Show male bonding in a way that does not exist anymore due to homophobia. This is a time when guys could be guys and were not concerned so much about showing affection or looking gay. Its a nice history of WWII that has not been shown before. Quality book and fun really for anyone.

Not the Caliber of Her Other Books

I have ABSOLUTELY loved this author's books in the past. The one I Did Not Finish (DNF). In fact, I stopped after the Characters did their third or fourth really dumb thing.
Allow me to explain. I like fast moving, Alpha-male former servicemen who interact with women. And this book promised to be very, very interesting, as the woman was allegedly an exceptionally well-educated, so you would think smart, woman. Additionally, all the other books by this author were exceptionally good. And I was willing to wade through the almost obligatory whining over why they "COULDN'T" be a couple. (Why do authors think this is helpful?) But here is this "smart" woman who thinks that because SHE doesn't know how a company in the business of providing protection for pay could protect her, THEY don't know how. That's really egotistical. Sometimes other people know more than you do. The SECOND piece of stupidity is that the HERO takes the Heroine to a "safe house" to hide her from the bad guys, BUT keeps in telephone contact with one of the bad guys because "he used to be a friend". Say what? That's dumb. Cell phone information would have led the bad guys right to the safe house. Oh, and then there's the question of why and how dumb you have to be to continue talking to one of the people you don't want to know where you are. THIRD, they answer the door of the "safe house" to respond to some policemen, DON'T ask to see any identity and think there is something "strange" about the situation. When the police leave, they should have left immediately, as well. BUT and this was the final straw for our two characters who "can't" have a relationship, instead of using their good sense of danger, the pair thinks NOW is the time to have wild monkey sex. AND then the bad guys find them. Who would have thought that would happen??? Oh, yeah, anyone and everyone!
THAT'S where I stopped reading. At that point, I was done with worrying over people who couldn't be bothered with exercising even a minimum of common sense. How an author, who wrote so very well in prior books, could write this one, is beyond me.
The premise was interesting, but it needed REAL people who aren't too stupid to live.

No Heat, No Emotional Connection

Ms. Bell writes a competent book. Having said that, in this book, there was no connection, for me, with either protagonist. I didn't feel their heat or, at the very least, their attraction to each other. I didn't feel Tessa's fear, or her angst and certainly didn't feel Rhys's regret. It was a lackluster story.

Even better than book 1

Rhys was awesome. He was a hardened trained interrogator who ended up saving Tessa from her interrogation ( read: torture) session with an old buddy of his. Tessa refuses to tell Rhys why her information is so important, but he still wastes no time getting the rest of the Sinner Saints on board with helping even though his boss, Carter, is a hard sell. Eventually, Tessa is forced to explain to Rhys how big, important, and dangerous the information in her head is. She would even take her own life before letting it get into the wrong hands. Rhys vows not to let things get that far. With the help of the team, Rhys sets out to help Tessa destroy her paper trail and secure her future.

I loved this story and am enjoying the series. I hope Charlie gets her chance with Bowie next.

Great resource!

This book is a great updated version to our other Country Music Encyclopedias. Pictures, background information about writers and performers, accomplishments and interesting facts make this a fun and interesting resource. Our family plays trivia games such as "Which states have most of the country artists come from?" We use the book for games and pleasure reading when we want to know about someone.

Curt Gooch was executive producer and creative consultant on the documentary/home video Inside the Casbah: A History of Casablanca Records and Filmworks. He lives in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Jeff Suhs is a regular contributor to several of the largest KISS websites and has contributed information to several published books on the band. In addition, he recently completed work on the CD-ROM game The KISS Trivia Challenge. He lives in Odessa, Florida.

Amazing....

After reading online that someone was attempting to assemble a "complete touring history" of the hottest band in the world, Kiss, my interest was immediately sparked. I had no idea what the book looked like, or what exactly it contained, but I didn't care. Being a die hard Kiss fan for several years now, I figured I'd get my money's worth. I wound up getting that and then some. This book, cowritten by Curt Gooch and Jeff Suhs is absolutely incredible. This is a Kiss fans dream come true; I've never seen anything like it. Everything you could possibly ask for is here. Details of every Kiss tour and every individual concert are explained in great detail. Insightful comments are given from members of Kiss' management, and others close to the band, as well as an occasional comment from band members themselves. And don't get me started on the pictures....Some of these have never been printed before until now, for example a picture of Ace right after one of his infamous car accidents which left his face in bad shape. This picture has him in makeup, but only half of his face is painted due to the injury. Casual fans are saying "what's the big deal?" but ... hard Kiss fans know that this type of stuff is just plain cool. Every set list for every show is included, as are the name of the venues and opening and headlining acts that shared the bills with Kiss. 288 pages, 3 pounds, it's a monster! God knows how long it will take me to get through the whole thing, but one thing is for sure.... this is must have for any Kiss fan. Hear the REAL stories behind every concert, things that you may have never heard before and may shock you! All in all, this is a great pick up for any Kiss fan, especially fans who purchased the box set and enjoyed the book that came along with it. I would compare it to this in the fact that they are both extremely informative and chock full of great photos of the band. So, if you're a true member of the Kiss Army, stop reading this and go get the book NOW. You'll be glad you did.

KISS misses yet another opportunity......

What a missed opportunity the members of KISS must be feeling now. I am sure that they had a chance to make this an official KISS book - but chose to discount the efforts to two enthusiastic fans simply wanting to document a band that they hold in such high regard. All the while, thinking of course that they could do it better. Only time will tell to see if "KISS" can produce a more thorough and well-documented history. The book is absolutely the "best collective history" of the band that I have read. The time and effort it took to research, check facts, compile and finally write this book is evident in the accuracy of the facts. The mere thank you and credits to people who assisted the authors in compiling the data - speaks to the accuracy itself. True KISS connoisseurs will recognize the value of the book - don't wait to add this book to your collection.

A testament to the power of finding strength in weakness

This powerfully written, yet simple book changed my life! In "The Wounded Healer," Nouwen addresses one of the main challenges of the human condition- our weaknesses. These wounds, as Nouwen refers to them, are so often viewed as sources of shame and guilt for us. He reminds us all, however, that these wounds, can be transformed into strengths, if we will allow them to be.
By accepting that we are human and addressing our human weaknesses, we can then turn them into helpful resources to extend the gift of emotional healing to others. Because, in order to reach people, we need a point of connection. We can all relate to experiences of emotional woundedness, and within appropriate relational boundaries, they can become instruments of healing.
Nouwen shares several stories, and conversations that he had with persons going through various experiences of emotional woundedness. One of the most poignant of these was a visit he made to a man who was about to go in for surgery to have a leg amputated. By offering himself as a compassionate listener, he was able to help the man find peace in the midst of a devastating loss.
A point of clarification that Nouwen makes well is that becoming a wounded healer does not mean that we dump all of our problems on people, or seek to wear them like badges. Instead, by being aware of our woundedness, and facing it, we can become more sensitized to the needs of the people around us- after all we are all subject to human imperfection.
If you are ready to find hope and a renewed perspective on helping others- read this book! I would highly recommend "The Wounded Healer" to all persons in caring professions, as well as anyone who just want to find peace in the midst of human challenges.

A necessary commentary on the life of a healer

Nouwen, in this classic work, explains how in one's weakness, one can still participate in the healing of others. A major theme of most of his books, Nouwen stresses that only in one's brokenness before God and humankind can people really transform community. Admittedly, the philosophy of the wounded healer offered at the beginning and end of the book gets a little thick, but both portions offer excellent insights that make it a great read. The great benefit of the book is the clear examples offered in the middle of the text. Examples of people dealing with terminal patients and the like really clarifie the condition that Nouwen addresses. A must-read for people in the helping professions and anyone else looking to impact people!

The Wounded Healer

Henri Nouwen has been blessed with true vision of the human condition. Mr. Nouwen has also been gifted with the answers to solve the condition of "Nuclear Man" and isolation. Anyone who is a minister or healer of any kind should read this book. It is a "must read". I appreciated Mr. Nouwen's synopsis' at the end of each chapter. This truly helped me to "drive the point home". I thank Mr. Nouwen for writing this book. I am presently reading his "Return of the Prodigal Son" book. Another "must read" book if one is interested in reaching the center of man.

A great disappointment

In 1862, the Union was not winning the Civil War. In 1862, the incompetent John Pope lost the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, which forced Lincoln to reappoint the timid George McClellan to command of the Army of the Potomac. Later the same year, the disastrous Battle of Fredericksburg was fought. So why does Conroy think that the Union could defeat both the Confederacy and the world's largest industrial and naval power?

As a previous reviewer has pointed out, in 1862 Britain was the preeminent industrial power. Just as the Union was industrially dominant over the Confederacy, Britain was industrially dominant over the Union. True, the British Army was small and not well led. That's because the Royal Navy was the major British military force. Just as the Union blockade of the South was effective, a British blockade of the North would have brought the Union to a standstill. And if anyone claims that the Union's ironclads would have defeated the Royal Navy, the first British ironclad ship was HMS Warrior, built in 1860. The British were quite aware of the value of ironclads, which is why they stopped building wooden battleships and frigates in 1860. Also, with the exception of USS New Ironsides, American ironclads were not ocean going ships. The British ironclads could safely cross the Atlantic.

I have other complaints about this book. I found the love/sex story to be quite unnecessary (although I did get a chuckle from the mental picture of Allan Pinkerton being found naked, painted red, and chained to a post in a Washington street). To say that the characters are wooden is to give them more subtlety than Conroy portrays. At one point early in the book, HMS Gorgon defeats USS St. Lawrence in a battle. Gorgon is described as a "steam frigate" mounting 74 guns. Sorry, Conroy, but a 74 gun ship was a battleship, not a frigate.

Other than the historical inaccuracies, the gratuitous sex, and the lack of three dimensional characters, "1862" is not a bad book.

One of Conroys best..... I particularly liked the inclusion of the Irish army, the slave "revolts" and the way he addressed the final dealings with England. Sometimes Conroy's dialogue is spot on and this was one of theose times.

An invaluable resource for Federal Courts

All of the thousands of law school study guides tout themselves as a means of breaking down the often complex material for students. Unfortunately, however, few are able to accomplish that goal, as the study guides themselves are often almost as large as the casebooks and do little to demystify law school courses. Chemerinsky's text is a refreshing change, as his Federal Jurisdiction hornbook helps you understand what is universally seen as the hardest course in law school, Federal Courts.
Federal Courts is such a difficult class because of the sheer complexity of the material. Sadly, many students, me included, are forced to use Hart and Wechsler's Federal Courts casebook which is itself very difficult to learn from (for reasons I discuss in my review of that book). Many casebooks try to go over too much: they spend time on general principles, certainly, but often get caught up in discussing every single case with some relevance to the course, with less focus on hammering down an understanding of the general principles. Hart and Wechsler is a prime example of this. Their casebook is difficult to digest because there is so much to learn. Their endnotes are filled to the brim with hundreds of cases, many of which are unnecessary to obtain a general understanding of the course. And let's be honest, while these cases might be vital for aspiring future clerks taking Federal Courts, not all of us are clerking for the D.C. Circuit anytime soon.
Chemerinsky's hornbook very adequately solves this problem. Of all of the study guides and hornbooks I have perused in law school, Chemerinsky's book helped guide me the most, in what is the hardest class I have taken. In well-defined sections, Chemerinsky breaks down the daunting Federal Courts in a manner that is easy to read and ultimately understand. Chemerinsky clearly as well as concisely lays out a framework for each of the key bedrock principles of Federal Courts and federal jurisdiction without getting caught up in going over every possible case with implications for federal courts. Chemerinsky does discuss the key exceptions as well as minor cases, but they flow very well with his general discussions of the base material of Federal Courts. His book, therefore, was extremely easy to absorb and helped me immensely in understanding Federal Courts.
I was often bewildered and perplexed by the material discussed in Hart and Wechsler and in class lectures. Chemerinsky's book tore down much of my confusion by helping me focus on the key concepts of Federal Courts, and not getting lost in the forest of cases delineated by the casebook and by my professor. I strongly recommend that any student taking Federal Courts buy this book. It is invaluable to learning the course. You would be doing yourself a disservice if you did not take a look at Chemerinsky.

amazing study aid for federal courts

I'm a third year law student currently taking federal courts with an amazing professor. However, this book gives a thorough, unbiased analysis of this extremely complicated and often unsettled area of the law. I usually recommend the "Example & Explanations" series for a helpful guide to actually understanding material; however, Chemerinsky is able to give an easy to read, comprehensive analysis of the federal court system, including justiciability, Congressional control of Federal and State court jurisdiction, Congressional power to create legislative courts under Art. I, federal subject matter jurisdiction of the federal courts, federal common law, federal relief against federal officers (Bivens actions), suits against state governments, the 11th amendment, federal court relief against local governments and state/local officers under 28 USC 1983, federal court review of state court decisions, the Anti-Injunction Act, federal abstention, and habeas corpus.

This book is not for the introductory class in federal procedure that most law students take first year (for that I highly recommend Freer's book Acing Civil Procedure, and the Examples & Explanations series on Federal Civil Procedure). However, every law student and practicing attorney should have a copy of this book! Really helps tie all these complicated topics together.

The only downside to the 4th edition (I have the book from 2001) is that it doesn't have a good analysis of CAFA, MMTJA, or general res judicata and collateral estoppel issues. But this book is absolutely amazing! I wish every law topic had a resource this helpful and reliable.

Helping you through Fed. Courts

This book was a great help to me getting through Federal Courts in addition to my textbook. As any law student can tell you, Federal Courts or Federal Jurisdiction probably outranks civil procedure as the most dreaded class at law school. I am a firm believer in the importance of the subject and this book was invaluable to me in class and in work. If you have a legal problem that will involve federal litigation, this book is a must have. It makes a subject that I often believe is as clear as reading tea leaves a little easier.
