Robert Priebe - I met the author a few weeks ago at her shop in Hallstatt. My wife was trying on a dress and I picked up one of two copies of Spiked lying on a table. I saw the author's picture and asked if the story was true and if anyone was prosecuted. I am a police chief in California and had investigated sexual assaults involving "date rape" drugs. When the author, Sharron, found out I was in law enforcement she begged me to read and review her book and to give it an honest review. I promised her I would, and I'm glad I did. The story is compelling and kept me involved and anxious to read more, There's my honest assessment but I am equally honest in saying I recommend everyone make effort to read it because the story is more than worth it. I could see this story becoming an excellent movie. For those contemplating this book, do it!

This book� illustrated the randomness of good and bad luck, and that,once targeted, someone who wants to do you harm has a frightening array of possibilities at his or her disposal, and you will be none the wiser until disaster strikes.
This book is a must-read for women who travel alone, to warn them to follow their instincts and to advise them that if a drink bought by a stranger tastes salty, not to drink it. Leave immediately. It's also a good idea to only accept a drink that comes out of an unopened can or uncapped bottle.
Personally, I believe this story to be true. The gut-wrenching terror of Sharron's experience written with such insight and detail lead me to suspect that it's based on her own story.

Interesting story - needs editing

I found this ebook as a free download listed under Memoirs/Biographies but the text claims that it is a novel (later the author claims that the story is true but that she wrote it as fiction to more accurately portray the central characters). The story is interesting -- a woman claims that she is drugged and hypnotized in order to unknowingly smuggle items into Europe from India. I don't doubt the possibility that this could happen, but it seems that perhaps the scheme is a bit grandiose for such a simple operation. The main character/author believes that it was a conspiracy between friends that were connected to some underground smugglers of some sort and set up a vast network of cronies to ensure that Sharron is not aware of that she will be transporting goods illegally. While some of it is very plausible, there are details like drivers being procured and several people in India (from drivers to tailors to the owners of the restaurant and various shops) are involved in duping her -- in fact, she believes that they have tagged personal items (like a necklace) with GPS trackers so that they can keep tabs on her and that they have hacked her laptop and tablet to utilize Skype to monitor her from afar and even provide subliminal messages/hypnosis. If we believe the core principal: that GhB was used to drug her, that would most certainly be enough -- beyond that, the hypnotism and spyware wouldn't be necessary. She would already be drugged and confused and easily mislead.

The reason that she believes any of this is because a man that she met en route to India, and further befriends throughout her vacation there, admits that he is drugging her and that her friends have sold her out. Without this tidbit of knowledge, she would not have suspected drugs or hypnosis and instead would have blamed drinking too much wine and memory loss (which she was experiencing prior to the trip). So the leap to GhB, while plausible, is only possible through this man's confession -- and if he was truly part of some sinister syndicate, why would he have admitted anything?

The story certainly gives the reader a lot to consider, especially in light of the effects of GhB, including amnesia and complacency, and the fact that it cycles through the body so quickly that it is undetectible after only a few hours so it is difficult to assess if someone has taken the drug or not. I will leave it up to you to decide whether you feel the entire event is a true story or a work of fiction.

As far as the editing goes, this book needs help. The author writes in the final pages that she was unable to pay an editor and makes apologies for errors in the book. I appreciate this, but there is a lot that could be corrected on a grammar/punctuation level without hiring a story editor. The author mentions that she speaks several languages, so it could be that English is not her most familiar dialect and that she is adapting other language composition techniques as well, but there are several instances of flat-out misspelled words and missing punctuation, in addition to the odd placement of dialog (again, this could be due to cultural interpretations, I am working from an American English perspective, where certain style rules are followed). There are also a number of European or British colloquialisms throughout that could easily be re-worded in a sentence to make them easier to understand. The author did add a few notes about Irish slang when it came up, although to me the words she explained were fairly commonplace (or could otherwise be interpreted by a wider audience).

My 2 cents: if I were the author, I would consider working with a story editor and really fine-tuning the pacing and chronology of events. Clean up the grammar and punctuation issues and write this as a memoir -- change the names of the people involved, if you must (they surely were pseudonyms to begin with) and tell your story exactly as it happened. This would give more authority/validity to your story and possibly help get the appropriate legal agencies involved.

A SHOCKING EXPOSE OF HOW AN INNOCENT VICTIM WAS USED TO COMMIT A MAJOR CRIME. DID THIS REALLY HAPPEN?

We have all heard stories about people having their drinks spiked by date rapists and thieves but there is little awareness of the true horror that can be inflicted on a victim. Combined with hypnoses and a little knowledge of computer technology, the so called truth and mind altering drugs GhB and others like it create the perfect the scenario to commit crime on a massive scale and the highest chance of escaping with impunity. Sharron Gold, former script supervisor for major films, describes a nightmare that if she is to be believed - and only readers of this gripping story can decide - will bring tingles down your spine as you realise that what happens to her, could happen to almost any of us.
That her saga begins in middle class rural England over a family Christmas and not in a nightclub in a trendy resort adds a shocking frisson to a deeply disturbing life-changing series of events; that it continues on the beaches of Goa, then in Paris and finally and back in her home town in Austria and moves at a Hitchcockian pace with a cast of characters whose enrichment is entirely dependent on her unknowing co-operation, keeps us spellbound on every page. We learn what the long term effects of the drugs can do, what the withdrawal from them is like. Perhaps most alarmingly, there is the appalling realisation that even with the ability to unravel what has been done, exposing the criminals without the concrete evidence that the law requires is a fruitless task. If you were used and abused by gangstalkers, left destitute and emotionally and psychologically scarred, what would you do? SPIKED is a must read for all generations.

A gut-wrenching read

This book had an incredibly unsettling effect on me as I read it. The story was so awful as it unfolded I felt a knot of unease in my gut. I was actually glad it wasn't too long as it disrupted my peace of mind. Why? Because it illustrated the randomness of good and bad luck, and that, once targeted, someone who wants to do you harm has a frightening array of possibilities at his or her disposal, and you will be none the wiser until disaster strikes.

Sharron's wrong move was to go and visit her childhood friend in the Cotswolds. While she was there she met evil in the form of a psychopathic couple. Unbeknownst to her, she was drugged and hypnotised with devastating effect. GhB is a truth drug as well as being the 'date rape' drug, so whilst under the influence, she answered all questions put to her about her friends, bank details, passwords and emails.

The story takes us India, to a paradise of beautiful Goan beaches, palm trees and a winter community of friends. As Sharron falls apart under manipulation her winter paradise turns into hell on earth. Eventually she returns to her Austrian village via Paris where her nightmare continues and it's just one stroke of luck that prevents the worst from happening to her. Despite living to tell the tale, she is faced with two more horrors - the first is coming off the drugs cold turkey and the second is the dilemma of whether she should go to the police or not knowing that she basically has no evidence. The criminals were experts in hiding their traces and removing all incriminating material. They aimed to totally destroy their victim for personal gain and the voyeuristic amusement of a few.

This book is a must-read for women who travel alone, to warn them to follow their instincts and to advise them that if a drink bought by a stranger tastes salty, not to drink it. Leave immediately. It's also a good idea to only accept a drink that comes out of an unopened can or uncapped bottle.

About the Author

Jonathan Clayden is a Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Manchester, where he and his research group work on the construction of molecules with defined shapes - in particular those where control of conformation and limitation of flexibility is important. Jonathan was awarded a BA (Natural Sciences) from Churchill College, Cambridge before completing his PhD with Stuart Warren, also at the University of Cambridge. He has been at the University of Manchester since 1994.


Nick Greeves is the Director of Teaching and Learning in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Liverpool. Nick is a Cambridge graduate, obtaining his PhD there in 1986 for work on the stereoselective Horner-Wittig reaction with Stuart Warren. He then held a Harkness Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and at Stanford University, California, and a Research Fellowship at Cambridge University before joining Liverpool in 1989 where he is currently a Senior Lecturer.

Stuart Warren is a former lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge and Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge. A graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge, Stuart completed his PhD at Cambridge with Malcolm Clark before carrying out post-doctoral research at Harvard University. He became a teaching fellow at Churchill College in 1971, and remained a lecturer and researcher at Cambridge until his retirement in 2006.

2ed vs 1ed

Since its appearance in 2001, "Clayden" is clearly the best book that undergraduates can acquire for their preparation in Organic Chemistry. This piece of art continues its hegemony in the second edition, so there is no point in comparing this book with other books actually in the market (that's the reason for 5 stars). Therefore, this review focus on comparisons between the first and second edition.

Main changes:

1) The main change in the new edition deals with the order of topic presentation. Clearly, the new order is better, and more logically fluent. For example, conjugate addition is now grouped with nucleophilic aromatic substitution.
Each chapter ends with a "further reading" section which was so much in need. These changes would be greatly valued by teachers.

2) some chapters that appeared in the 1st ed are not included in the printed version of the 2 ed, however, it should be clear that these chapters still exist and every owner of the new edition have access to then via the companion web site

3) the problems section at the end of each chapter is no longer included in the printed version, they are included in the companion web site.

4) Only few discussions were rephrased with only modest enlargement of some discussions and deletion of others. This can be seen for example in the chapter of "organometallic chemistry" were discussion of the Buchwald-Hartwig reaction is enlarged (great!) and the Pauson-Khand reaction deleted (pity).

5) Figures and paper quality are better in the new edition. These reflects in the instructor material which basically consist of digital figures inserted in ppt for each chapter.

Some not so great comments:

The major flaw of "Clayden" since its first edition in this reviewer opinion is its lack of sufficient exercises. This was aggravated in the 2ed (the first has around 15 problems per chapter...now only 10!), however, their inclusion as a .pdf downloadable file opens the opportunity for redemption, as it seems there is no reason why this short selection of problems cannot change by 30 or 40 per chapter in the future. Hopefully the excellent solutions guide from the first edition will appear as electronic files that can change with time (yes, it is not yet available).
As a teacher, I usually impart from "Clayden" and assign the problems from other texts (e.g. Carey adv. org. chem. part A, or Grossman the art of writing reasonable org react mech).
The book is now accompanied by a web site that brings a lot of animations to almost every single reaction that appeared in the text, however, access to this site is not restricted and you don't need to be an owner of the 2ed to enjoy this. (just go to [...] and search)

in conclusion, if you need to buy an organic chemistry textbook, don't hesitate, BUY CLAYDEN 2 ed. However, if you are an owner of the 1st ed, STAY WITH IT as the goodies for updating are not sufficient.

The best modern textbook for organic chemistry

This is undoubtedly the best modern book for learning organic chemistry. Unlike some other books which present organic chemistry as a set of facts and reactions to be learnt and memorized, this book instead emphasizes the unifying threads between different concepts and also stresses the assimilation of those concepts through real-life applications. Common themes such as syn-anti addition, carbocations and orbital overlap tie together disparate reactions and aspects of organic chemistry.

The first edition of this book was published in 2001 and the updated edition in 2012, so the discussion in this book includes reactions and reagents that are often missing from other comparable texts. For instance the volume still provides the most complete and readable description of the Grubbs metathesis reaction that I have come across, clearly emphasizing the mechanism, the effects of different ligands and solvents and applications to complex natural products. Other reactions of paramount importance to both academia and industry which are presented in the book include the palladium-catalyzed Suzuki, Heck, and Sonogashira couplings (which were recently awarded the Nobel Prize). The Buchwald-Hartwig reaction which was not as developed in 2001 but which has since seen immense growth gets an especially detailed mention.

The volume covers the whole gamut of current organic chemistry. Apart from its modern and unifying outlook, the other feature that stands out is the way it stresses the practical relevance of all this material. Organic chemistry is really the basis of our modern way of life and the book reflects this fact. The value of almost every important reaction and reagent is demonstrated by its application to the synthesis of an important drug, polymer, food additive or agrochemical. The book also does a great job of illustrating the great value of simple concepts; for instance, one chapter discusses the application of pKa to the development of the bestselling drug ranitidine, another provides an explanation of the lachrymatory (tear-inducing) properties of onions as rooted in sigmatropic reactions involving sulfur compounds. From the clinic to the kitchen, this book drives home the fact that organic chemistry is not just an intellectually rewarding exercise but is at the foundation our daily existence.

In addition to these qualities, the book is written in an honest, informal style and the authors admit uncertainty where it exists. Color enhances bonds, atoms and mechanistic arrows while boxed material contains key concepts and intriguing examples. Overall we are treated to an incredible amount of information in an attractive format and the authors must have really spent a lot of efforts in planning and presenting it. In its second edition this book continues to be an extremely useful source for students and practitioners alike and it is highly recommended.

a quote from page 434 sums up everything you need to know

The quote below talks about something called Markovnikov's Rule, which is a mnemonic device taught in most organic chemistry textbooks (it references a figure with a reaction immediately below it).

"There is a traditional guideline called Markovnikov's Rule for electrophilic additions of H-X to alkenes, which can be stated as: 'The hydrogen ends up attached to the carbon of the double bond that had more hydrogens to start with.' We don't suggest you learn this rule, although you may hear it referred to. As with all 'rules' it is much more important to understand the reason behind it. For example, YOU can now predict the product of the reaction below. With all due respect, Markovnikov couldn't."

This embodies the spirit of the entire textbook. Quite simply the best.

INTRODUCTION

Meetings are an essential part of the life of every orga-

nization. As a manager, one-quarter or more of your career

will be spent in group meetings. As much as 70 percent to 80

percent of your career is going to be spent face-to-face and

one-on-one with other people as well as in groups.

The more people there are in your workplace and the

greater the complexity required for the performance of

interrelated tasks, the more necessary it is for people to meet

in groups to solve problems, make decisions, share information,

and exchange views and opinions.

My favorite expression is that “meetings are management

in action.” They are a major opportunity for you to display

managerial competence (or lack thereof ) as well as to

develop your communication skills, to influence and persuade

others, and to advance the goals of the organization.

However, meetings are like advertising. It is estimated

that 50 percent of the dollars spent on advertising are

wasted, but nobody knows which 50 percent it is. It is also

estimated that half of the time spent in meetings is wasted,

but nobody knows how to eliminate the unnecessary half.

Many meetings go on too long, are ineffective, are not

results-oriented, or are vague and directionless. Nonetheless,

they cannot be avoided. Meetings remain absolutely essential

in the business environment and essential to your success.

Influence Others

In this book, you will learn how to manage and participate in

meetings more effectively so that you get the maximum

return on the time invested in meeting with other people.

As a manager, the way you plan and conduct a meeting

and the way you perform in a meeting are major factors in

your career success. In a meeting, you are being observed by

both your supervisors and your subordinates. Your superiors

especially will be very alert to the quality and quantity of

contribution you make in a meeting. If you handle yourself

well in meetings, you’ll be hallmarked as an up-and-coming

meetings, it is essential for your success that you learn how to

get the very most out of meetings and how to ensure that the

Save Time

If you become excellent in participating in and conducting

meetings, you can add as much as 40 percent of lost time

back into your day for doing productive work and getting

more results, which will help you move rapidly up the corporate

ladder. But if you cannot function excellently in meetings,

you cannot be successful in management.

In this book, we are going to talk about two main types of

meetings. The first one, with which you are most familiar, is

the group meeting where people come together for a variety

of reasons. The second is the one-on-one meeting, where

you meet with one or a small number of people to negotiate,

interview, discipline, hire, fire, reward, delegate, or carry out

other managerial activities.

This book includes twenty-one key ideas derived from

many years of study and research into the organization and

coordination of effective meetings. When you begin incorporating

these ideas, or even some of them, into your meeting

management strategy, you will become so much more

effective in meetings, and probably quite quickly, that you

will not believe the difference.

This one is a keeper

A must for every manager’s library.
How many times have you sat in seemingly interminable meetings waiting for the leader to get on with it…to get to the point; or watching two rival managers verbally sparring while the rest of the attendees duck trying to avoid the gorilla dust? Or worse yet have you actually running a meeting like this one?
Then you need this little book; the latest addition to the Brian Tracy Success Library.
Delving into this short read you’ll find tips and tools that will insure that you have run your last boring and ineffective meeting:
From the book:
• Set a time limit for the meeting. If you say it will last two hours it will last two hours if you say it will last thirty minutes it will last thirty minutes. Funny how that works.
• Send out an agenda. The more detailed the agenda the better the meeting will run.
• Set goals: Decide what you want to get out of the meeting.
• Decided who needs to attend the meeting and why. Be careful of associates in search of a meeting.
• Check out the room. Always check out the room. You don’t want to be having a business seminar next to a Guns and Roses concert.
• Set up the seating. The best is the horseshoe shape, the worst is theater style
Tracy covers both types of meetings from the large training sessions to the one on ones. He even describes how you should be sitting when having a one on one meeting; each of you at a corner of the table. How to get your point across; and how to listen.

This is a NASTY book but bless Daniel R. Brower's dead heart

This book has unclear sources of quotes. My history class actually makes fun of the book and we have long discussions on how much we hate this book. Daniel R. Brower was probably a great guy and i'm sad he died but damn this book stank! The only positive thing our class could say about this book is the texture of the pages are pretty good, its soft and smooth and the book is very bendy and nice to hold but still it is terrible to read. If I cant fall asleep at night i just take out this book and start reading it and i am out cold within seconds. If you like a book that is dense, boring and unreliable than this is the book for you, if you were born with a sense of quality than buy a history book by Susan Sparrow.
