Interesting and informative

This textbook was a pleasure to read. It has timely—albeit liberally slanted—articles and excerpts, which foster critical thinking and interest most people. The information presented was clear and well-explored. I now feel more comfortable with the formal elements of argument. Thanks Rottenberg!

Good resource, but needs more student examples

One of the obvious positives about this book is that it covers a great deal of ground. Not only does it take you through the ins and outs of argument, rhetoric, claims, and the writing process in general, but it also has some worthy, engaging, and applicable topics (gun control, social media, the dangers of sports, childhood obesity, etc.) as basis for what students can expect to both read and write about.

The Elements of Argument is a resource that any college composition student should have (if they can find a copy at a decent price, that is). It starts general, with a chapter on what argument is, and then shifts to being more specific with chapters that give advice on such elements as making a claim, backing up claims with support, researching, debating issues, documenting and research writing, and understanding multiple viewpoints of a topic.

While the topics and the tips are helpful, it would have been more beneficial to simply see more examples in action. There are many writing pieces from various accredited new sources (Los Angeles Times, New York Times, etc), but there are not enough practical examples of student writing in action of the aforementioned elements of writing. Element of Argument does offer some examples, but some are not as helpful as one would hope.

Still, despite this, there are many helpful aspects to this book, and I think it would be a solid resource for any student just starting in college and needing some helpful tips on beginning the writing process.

De-stress with some light, fun, sexy MM reading

WOW. I started reading this book on a Sunday night, and didn't finish until noon on Monday, at which point I promptly fell asleep. I could not put it down, literally. First off, love the characters. Shaz and Billy really take up a big space in your heart. My favorite thing about Shaz is his confidence, and also just his ability to be himself without regard for anybody's judgements. My favorite thing about Billy is how fun-loving he is. In everything he does, there is just this underlying feeling that he likes to see the good in the world, and if he has a choice, he wants to see the fun in something rather than be scared by it, even though a lot of what he goes through is scary. And of course watching the two of them fall in love is perfect. Lain is a talented writer, and this story has plenty of drama, though not so much that you really hurt (there's only a little hurt!), which is good for me. This story is definitely sweet, but it's also humorous, like SUPER humorous. Laugh out loud quality. But this story is also just plain chock-full of delicious romance. I will definitely be reading this again, once I recover from my all-nighter! Can't get enough of these guys. Oh, and I don't think this is a spoiler...but...I love that these guys switch, so if you like a good, switchy couple, read this! Thank you, Tara Lain!

Amzingly wonderful M/M romance !!!

Wow, this is exciting, sexy, realistic, funny, serious, emotional, engrossing, heartwarming and I loved it !!! The deep characters are engaging, with an interesting tale to tell, and along with super hot sexiness, this is a worthwhile read. We have Billy Ballew, construction supervisor who has three failed engagements to women, is devoted to his family, coaches Little League, and has two cats, and a hard as nails bible quoting mom. He goes into the coffee shop and - wham - he sees Chase/Shaz, a beautiful man with flowing red hair, about to be punched by a homophobic ass. At 6'5", all he has to do is look at the man, and the man backs down. Shaz was braced for the hit, and is happy to be standing, looking at his "Knight". Later, when he's herded to a stylist to get fixed up for his sister's wedding, it's Shaz, the top-shelf celebrity stylist, who walks in. He's gorgeous, with long red hair, and the whole package is a sight to behold. Billy had a few encounters with gay men, but is beginning to realize he's more than interested, not just in any man, but only Shaz. The feeling is mutual. A deal is struck for fittings, a new set of clothes, and a promise of a photo session. We have a lot going on, with Shaz, his business expanding, and with Billy, who wants a Contractor's license and more in his life. The guys are getting to know a bit about each other and themselves and what they truly want. This is witty, funny, amazingly caring and defines their true love. Billy is brave and sweet, blossoming in his new gayness. Once he finds his true self, he owns it, and battles the homophobic work crew, bigoted Little League parents, his Mom. Flamboyant Shaz we find out has been hit and verbally abused by his father the minister. I loved the cats, and why they were named Clancy and Yerby, loved Shaz's stuffed cat named Barcheil and how important he was. (FYI: Barcheil was an ancient Hebrew Archangel of blessings) Loved the Bible knowledge Shaz wielded skillfully with Billy's Mom. Loved that these guys were perfect for one another, like pieces of a puzzle put into in place. Read it. Find out how Billy passed the Contractor's test.
I was engrossed in this amazingly beautiful story. Thank you so much Tara Lain for your well written tale.
I'll be re-reading this one, and I'll never forget it. It is that memorable.

A joyful offering. Great, satisfying read.

Other reviewers have stated much of what I felt reading this story. So what I want to say is that this author manages to capture joy. The joy of discovering who one really is and becoming expressive about it, both privately and publically. The joy of meeting the world head on and grabbing for the gusto after a life of flat, boring, sameness. The joy of finding someone to share your life with who just fits.

I look forward to the upcoming offering in the series as I'll get to meet the MCs again and discover the story of one of the secondary characters in this book. I've already preordered it.

This book was second hand but in great condition. To purchase a new one in Australia was almost double the price.
The book in itself it absolutely brilliant and is useful as an adjunct to my masters in oncology. I would highly recommend this book for any health professional training in oncology.

Michael Francis Pennock (1945-2009) was the author of several bestselling textbooks for Catholic high schools, including, Encountering Jesus in the New Testament, Your Life in Christ, Our Catholic Faith, and three recent texts to support the new US Bishops' curriculum framework. He remains one of the most respected names in catechetical circles.

Pennock taught theology for more than thirty-five years, mostly at his beloved alma mater, St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Ohio. His students, numbering more than fifteen thousand, continue to pour out their remembrances and support for the man they called Doc Pennock.

Excellent introduction to Catholicism...ideal for RCIA

We have been using "This is our Faith" by Michael Francis Pennock in our RCIA class. Written in a simple and direct style, "This is our Faith" is an eminently readable and highly accessible introduction to Catholic teaching and theology. Pennock divided the text into four sections that parallel those of the Catechism: The Profession of Faith, focusing on the creeds; The Celebration of the Christian Mystery, which focuses on liturgy and the sacraments; Life in Christ, which emphasizes Christian morals; and Christian Prayer. Individual chapters consist mostly of Questions and answers--making "This is our Faith" sort of a FAQ for Catholics. Each question is cross-referenced to the Catechism. Curiously, the teachers of my RCIA class sort of discourage us from reading the Catechism. (Is that typical?) But I like having the cross-references so that I can follow up where the text doesn't provide enough detail. Pennock's theology seems sound and conventional, yet he reflects both traditional church teaching and current thinking. Anyone in RCIA ought to pick up "This is our Faith."

Great book to tell you what, perhaps not as great for why.

I thought this book did a wonderful job of explaining Catholic beliefs in a straightfoward manner. It touches on pretty much every topic that you could be interested in, and I especially like its question-and-answer format. I believe that one of the best aspects of this book is that, for the most part, you can skip around. If you just have questions about the sacrament of marriage for instance, you can just read that chapter to get your information; it doesn't depend too heavily on all the chapters before it (although everything leading up to it is certainly important also, specifically things like the basis of the Catholic faith)
What I don't feel is covered as well is the reasoning behind the beliefs. In many sections of the book, references are made to the bible as well as various papers the Vatican has composed. However, I feel that many of the topics warrant much more information about the history behind them, how certain decisions were made, etc. After thinking about it though, I think perhaps that is outside the author's intention for this book; I'm sure someone could write a book on the history of each topic alone.
Ultimately, this is a great no-nonsense book about the beliefs and teachings of the Catholic church. You'll have to look elsewhere to find out WHY they believe and teach it, though.

This is Not Our Faith

This is Our Faith by Michael Pennock which is based upon his earlier Seeker's Catechism which has received very poor reviews on Amazon is very, very weak and troubling. I would not recommend it to anyone serious about the Catholic faith. It is a very poor text, in many ways. They correlation between it and the CCC is very awkward at times, or other times, they just plain conflict. For example, the CCC states that the goal/objective of ecumenism is the reconciliation of all Christians to the Catholic Church. You will not find this anywhere in Pennock's book. In fact, Pennock, in contradiction to the CCC, states that the goal of ecumenism is: a common commitment among Christians to live out the gospel and to be open to the unifying action of the Holy Spirit." Or, in violation of USCCB instruction regarding catechetical instruction, Pennock caveats nearly every statment of faith with: "the Catholic church teaches"... or "Catholics believe.." lending the impression to the reader that there are other acceptable teachings that are just as valid as what "the Catholic church teaches." Most alarming, though, is his depiction of Christ. In the chapter "Jesus: Lord and Messiah", we are first told that Christ is compassionate, self-giving and humble, but Pennock doesn't get around to addressing his divinity until the last page and then only places it in a list of dogmas.

Similarly, when answering the question "What is meant by the 'real presence'?", Pennock states that Jesus is present in the "assembly", the priest, and "the word", but he lists Christ's presence in the Eucharist - what the Catechism of the Catholic Church calls the "source and summit of the Christian faith" - last. Pennock, has such a lack of zeal for the Catholic faith, that by reading his "catechism" he nearly sucked out all the zeal I had inside of me. This primary texts gets two big thumbs down. How did this book ever get a imprimatur???
