A fantastic tool if you're planning on applying to PA school

A fantastic tool if you're planning on applying to PA school. I find having all information in one source where you are able to write notes, ect is better than flipping through saved computer bookmarks. I also believe this is a great tool for college advisors to have on hand for pre-medical students. I hope to see future editions with possibly blank generalized "check lists" of requirements. Worth the money!

This book is amazing so far

This book is amazing so far! It helped me narrow down my choices! If it weren't for this book i'd be on my laptop for hours and go through every single websites and creating my own excel sheet! Maybe it'd be cool to add couple pages of "worksheets" or "my timeline" to have your GPA, pre-reqs you've taken, HCE you have, your top choices and such to see how you're doing and where you are at on the timeline. Recommend it to every pre-PA students and wishing good luck to everybody out there.

About the Author

Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an English writer, mathematician, Anglican deacon, and photographer. medical writing at its best

Dr Goldfrank has published previous editions of this book and they have been gigantic textbooks that will teach you while at the same time strengthen your arm and shoulder muscles from the sheer weight of them.

Here we now have a one thousand page paperback size book that is a delight to hold and read, especially since the contributors are excellent writers.

I'm not an MD but love learning medicine. This book will help you understand disease processes through the lens of toxic substances, their effect on the body, and their treatments.

I noticed the text discusses poisoning by Aluminum Phosphide (ALP), which can come in small wafers and, when set inside a grain storage container, will kill rodents, etc. Aluminum Phosphide is being used in India in epidemic proportions for suicides. At a website (jkscience.org) for Indian doctors I found a paper from doctors who, as you might expect, have a great deal of experience treating Aluminum Phosphide poisonings. One recommendation is to give 400 mg hydrocortisone IV every 4-6 hours to ALP victims which these doctors claims is essential for recovery considering the adrenal gland, which produces hydrocortisone, is often severely damaged in ALP poisoning. That is certainly the highest dose I've ever heard of, but it is hard to argue with the voice of experience. Goldfrank's doesn't mention using hydrocortisone in the treatment of ALP and maybe they should. Nor is treatment with magnesium sulfate mentioned in Goldfrank's Manual, which treatment is a mainstay of Indian doctors.

Dr. Archie B. Carroll is Robert W. Scherer Chair of Management and Corporate Public Affairs, Emeritus, and Professor of Management Emeritus in the Terry College of Business, University of Georgia. He is also part-time Director of the Nonprofit Management and Community Service Program in the Terry College. Dr. Carroll received his three academic degrees from The Florida State University in Tallahassee. He has published numerous books, chapters, articles, and encyclopedia entries. His research has appeared in the ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT JOURNAL, ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT REVIEW, BUSINESS AND SOCIETY, JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT, BUSINESS ETHICS QUARTERLY, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS ETHICS, BUSINESS ETHICS: A EUROPEAN REVIEW, and many others. He has served on the editorial review boards of BUSINESS AND SOCIETY, BUSINESS ETHICS QUARTERLY, ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT REVIEW, JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT, and the JOURNAL OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS. She received her Ph.D. from the Stern School of Business at New York University. Dr. Buchholtz's research focused on the social and ethical implications of corporate governance, in particular, and the relationship of business and society in general. Her work has appeared in Business and Society, Business Ethics Quarterly, the Academy of Management Journal, the Academy of Management Review, the Journal of Management, Organization Science, the Journal of Management Studies, and Corporate Governance and International Review. She served on the editorial boards of Business and Society and Business Ethics Quarterly. Her teaching and consulting activities focused on the areas of business ethics, social issues, strategic leadership, and corporate governance. Her service learning activities in the classroom received a Trailblazer Advocate of the Year award from the Domestic Violence Council of Northeast Georgia. She was the recipient of numerous teaching awards, including Profound Effect on a Student Leader. She was also named Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Georgia. Dr. Buchholtz was past Division Chair of the Social Issues in Management Division of the Academy of Management. She served on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Management and the ethics task force that designed a Code of Ethics for the Academy and became the inaugural chairperson of the Academy's Ethics Adjudication Committee when the code was put into effect. In 2015, she received the Sumner Marcus Award from the SIM Division of the Academy of Management.

If you ever have a class that recommends this book I would encourage you not to buy it! It literally only states super basic stuff that we all should know on our own. If your professor decides to quiz in it, most answers can easily be googled.(questions to this book are standardized and therefore a ton of people have the answers online.

Nothing like the movie...and for once I'm glad to say that

Since it was originally written in the early 1900s, I don't imagine too many people nowadays have read this book without having heard of it through the 1985 Richard Pryor movie adaptation. But if you enjoy the film, as I do, then I'd recommend the novel if you can find it.

About all I'll say in comparing the 2 versions is this: the one and only similarity is they both center around a man named Montgomery Brewster having to dispose of a certain sum of willed money within a specified time period, without telling anyone why, in order to be eligible for a larger fortune. That's it. The novel's amounts are different, Mr. Brewster's profession and friends are different, and even the reason for the whole game is totally different - more complex and interesting in the novel, I thought. So it follows that Monty's methods of spending his money and the adventures, setbacks, and romances he experiences along the way make the novel a completely different story. Without giving away the book's ending, I will say that's different too, but equally satisfying.

Basically, if you're hesitant about tackling the novel because you're afraid it's just an outdated version of a story you already know, don't be. Read the book and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Better than the movie

The 1985 movie was great, but Brewster's methods are far more diverse and humorous in the book. Notable highlights:
-Brewster befriends a pair of muggers by insisting they steal everything, even the $300 they overlooked in his right pocket.
-He hosts a luxury cruise for 50 to Europe, and the guests stage a mutiny to curb Brewster's inexplicable generosity.
-An Arab sheik tries to steal Brewster's fiance in Egypt, but is shot in the head while absconding.
A possible detractor: the book has far more dramatic content than the movie. This is not simply a comedic vehicle. It is thoroughly absorbing, nevertheless.

Brewster Millions, the book

George Barr McCutcheon wrote a book called Brewster's Million in 1902 under the name of Richard Greaves. It has been made into a movie multiple times. There is a 1985 movie with Richard Pryor as Brewster and his side kick was played by John Candy. The book is a 306 page story of how a person in the 1900's spends a million dollar inheritance so that he might receive an inheritance of multiple millions. The twist of families in disagreement with each other spurs this quagmire. The friends play the role of restraint due to the fact that part of the spending required Brewster to share that fact with no one. The other twist in the story is that Brewster must spend this money in a manner in which he will be a pauper, a man with no material wealth except the clothes on his back.

If you like to dream of how you could spend that million so you can inherit more, this is your book to read. If you have friends who do and those who do not stand by you no matter what, this is a book to read to find how loyalty can pay off. If you have a Kindle and want a fun, though time period influenced read then this is a great book since it is free.
