I am rating the download onto my kindle. The print is too small to read and when you attempt to enlarge the print, the kindle locks up. Not usable at all for classes. Very frustrated with trying to return this to Amazon. I have never had a problem with items in the past, but downloading this textbook has been frustrating. Also, the textbook is not available in Windows8, just in case that would be more readable. I am going to have to purchase the paper copy after paying $80 for Kindle rental for one semester. If anyone can help me with how to contact Amazon to get a refund, I would appreciate it!

Could be better

The price on Amazon was much better than buying new in store. It is slightly cheaper to rent the kindle version, but I prefer having hardcopy that I could potentially keep forever or resell. As for the content... I'm learning, but it could definitely explain things in greater depth in certain places. I've done a lot of independent supplememental reading to get a better understanding of some topics, and despite the many new terms and concepts, have discovered this text barely scratches the surface and is very nontechnical.

Double Consciousness

The selected stories in Albahari’s Learning Cyrillic explore what Albahari calls the “double consciousness” of the immigrant. The titles of the twenty-seven stories, a short form well suited to Albahari’s wry powers of observation and invention, reflect the nature of the short story as Goethe so well (and untranslatably) defined it: “eine sich ereignende unerh�rte Begebenheit”—a sensational or incredible event taking place in the narration. “Squirrel, Peanut, Hat,” “Plums in Saskatchewan,” “Holding Hands,” “Calgary Real Estate,” “The Pajamas,” and “Hitler in Chicago” all announce their intent to recount a single event. And in Albahari’s case, these single events will disclose, each in its own way, the double consciousness of the stories’ narrators.

The stories in this collection are unsettling, especially as they demonstrate that identity is anything but singular.

“Learning Cyrillic,” the book’s title story, is divided into 37 numbered paragraphs, a formal device quite different from the novel without paragraphs but that likewise slows and disrupts a reading. The story is told by a lonely Serb who has emigrated to a cold, Canadian city where on Friday evenings he goes to church, not to pray, he says, but to teach Serbian to children of fellow immigrants. The story juxtaposes two lost causes: the impossible task of preserving Serbian language and culture in a context in which the English-speaking children are eager to assimilate and the equally impossible attempt by a mysterious Indian to preserve his Siksika language and culture in a place and time where his people are known only as Blackfeet whose remains are displayed in a museum.

The events of this story are largely unremarkable, but as the fragments accumulate a reader begins to sense the narrator’s profound loneliness, a feeling heightened by the isolation shared in somewhat different ways by the genial but somewhat clueless priest in whose church the Serbian lessons are given and by the Indian who eventually reveals that his name is Thunder Cloud. The story’s last three sections (35, 36, 37) end with three bleak sentences: “I shut my eyes and I’m gone. . . . I find a dead mouse. . . . I start to walk until I find myself across the street.” Gone, dead, the narrator finds himself only on the other side of the street, not within the church and not in the Cyrillic letters of his Serbian language. He finds himself, as do all immigrants, in the language of the new country, in English-language “green letters” of the pedestrian signal that invite him to cross the street. The German word for misery, “Elend,” means in its root sense “out of or away from one’s country.” The characters in this and the other fine stories by David Albahari are all—humorously and gently and each with his or her quirks—miserably away from home. Which leaves me sad as well in the early darkness of this November afternoon. All readers are immigrants.

About the Author
W. Frank Hipp Professor of Insurance and Professor of Finance in the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. He received his Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Illinois in 1979 and was on the faculty of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania during 1978-88. Dr. Harrington has authored and edited many books and published numerous articles in academic and professional journals. A frequent speaker on insurance markets and regulation, he has consulted for many leading insurance organizations and is former President of both the American Risk and Insurance Association and the Risk Theory Society. He was named the 1990 Insurance Educator of the Year by the Professional Insurance Agents Foundation. Greg Niehaus is Professor of Insurance and Finance in the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from Washington University in 1985. From 1985-90, he was on the finance faculty at the University of Michigan and from 1996-97 he held the A.J. Pasant Chair of Life Insurance and Financial Services at Michigan State University. He has published articles in the Journal of Risk and Insurance, the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Journal of Business, the Journal of Banking and Finance, Financial Management, The Accounting Review, and the Journal of Insurance Regulation. He has won several teaching awards in the Moore School. In 2000, he became Chair of the Banking, Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate Department.

Horrible book for Risk Management Class - defeats the purpose because so poorly written

Let me start by saying that I do have some experience with risk management from a professional sense - I hold a CPCU, Assoc in Comm Underwriting, an Assoc in Risk Mgmt, worked for a major national ins carrier, and also use RM in my current professional as well. The bottom line here is that this book is simply a mess. The author's have trouble explaining basic concepts, move too quickly into trying to provide real world examples before they solidify the concept, contradict themselves on definitions between chapters, and introduce complicated concepts (for example the grossly inadequate statistics lessons in chapter 3) far too early when they should be focused on building a solid foundation of risk mgmt in general. Quite simply the book is all over the place and it's unclear what purpose the author's are trying to achieve. It needs a complete rewrite!

I bought the book for a basic risk mgmt class for my mba program - the book served to simply make the class more difficult than it needed to be.

Large Boxes for Each Day Make This a Good Choice for Family's "Master Calendar"

The ANSEL ADAMS 2017 WALL CALENDAR is the same as the one sold in retail bookstores at year's end, but I like to buy it from Amazon as soon as it is offered (usually in July). That way, I can write in appointments from the upcoming year as soon as they are scheduled. (Each year’s calendar includes a full page for January of the following year, but my advance appointments usually extend beyond January.)

The main reason that I buy this calendar, year after year, is that the extra-large date boxes provide ample space for recording all of my family's medical appointments, upcoming meetings and activities, and other date-related reminders. I always save each used calendar as a quick reference for that entire year's appointments and activities.

When hanging up, open to a full month, the calendar measures 15-1/2" wide by 25" long. The monthly photo and calendar pages each measure 15-1/2" wide by 12-1/2" long.

Each month's calendar page includes a mini-calendar for last month and next month, and indicates holidays, moon phases, and important items like daylight savings time changes. The black and white photographs by Ansel Adams are beautiful, and every year's selection is different.

When Miss Frizzle leaves the bus to investigate, she gets lost in space, and the students visit the outer planets without her. They reconnect with her eventually, and the group ends up back in the classroom, making a chart and a mobile based on their discoveries. The planetarium is closed for repairs, so the Magic School Bus blasts off on a real tour of the solar system. After their previous field trips, the children in Ms. Frizzle's class are all blase about such things; as they land on the Moon, Venus, and Mars, and fly by the other planets and the Sun, they comment on what they see, generate a blizzard of one- or two-sentence reports on special topics and--even while Ms. Frizzle is temporarily left behind in the asteroid belt--crack terrible jokes ("Could Saturn take a bath? Yes, but it might leave a ring!"). Although some of the information is radically simplified--people are said to float in space because "without a large mass nearby . . . they do not have weight"--Cole keeps the narrative specific without burdening it with loads of facts. Degen's fresh, energetic illustrations complement the breathless pace perfectly. Best children's science series ever.

The Magic School Bus Lost in the Solar System is one is a series of science adventure books by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen (Illustrator), all of which are trulky excellent. The chart the adventures of Ms. Frizzle and her class as they go on some really interesting field trips.
The books operate on several levels. They work as adventure stories as the manner in which they get diverted from an ordinary school field trip to the adventure at hand is always entertaining. The illustrations are truly wonderful and add to the story line very effectively. The books do in fact contain a lot of basic information about the topic at hand, so your kids are actually learning something as they read. And, as a final bonus, the books always involve some sore of class socialization issue, so your kids are exposed to some real life classroom issue, (here it's a Miss know-it-all type) and strategies for dealing with them as well. On top of all that, the books are just plain fun.
A great series for late pre-schoolers and early elementary age kids. So, what are you waing for? Jump on the Magic School Bus and have some fun!!!

Ms. Frizzle and her class are delightful. This book is a must-have for children interested in the solar system. The students in my second grade class thoroughly enjoyed it. It is PACKED with information. My students even asked if they could take notes! The book has sparked such excitement about the solar system that I find myself searching for more books to feed their interest.

Magic School Bus

Would you really board a bus that could turn into a spaceship? Well, the kids in Ms. Frizzle's class did it once again. The Magic School Bus Gets Lost in the Solar System by Joanna Cole. This time they were off on another fantastic adventure in space. It gets very crazy in his book when Ms. Frizzle gets lost in space and the class has to go on without her. The children also have to learn now to deal with Arnold's cousin Janet. She is a "know it all" who shares everything with every one. This book is great for a couple of reasons. First, the pictures really let you visualize space. Second, the pages are set up so that you can learn something on every page. This book is a really good introduction to a space unit. It really encourages you to learn more about space. I think the author must include her own love of adventure and learning in every magic school bus book. She has so many great lessons that are packed with information. I hope you look forward to finding out if the children can save Ms. Frizzle and if there will be any more great adventures!

Not as awesome as I thought it was going to be.

The book says it is filled with blanket, coushions, and accessories stuff, but it is 96 percent blanket patterns. I was disappointed with most pixels patterns. Most stuff was like car patterns, food. There was however some cute patterns. If you are getting this book in hopes to make really cute various things, then you maybe disappointed.

Geeky granny-square-based projects -- gotta make them all!

I found this at a local bookstore yesterday and fell in love instantly with the concept of 8-bit videogame-inspired designs which could all be built from super-easy granny squares. It helps that the UK author picked a yarn weight and hook size which are both popular in the US, too (so many crochet patterns from UK designers call for DK yarn, which is commonly used over there, but a bit harder to obtain in the USA). Both metric and US measurements and hook sizes are provided (although in her explanation of how to estimate yarn requirements, the author talks about "yardage/meterage" but then uses feet/meters in her example). The examples are all worked up using a 5mm/H hook and Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran 101 Yarn, although the author freely suggests that one can use whichever yarn & hook combination will provide a similar gauge, so long as one can find a yarn with enough different colors in its range to make up the designs. (I would suggest Simply Soft Brites Yarn H9700B 6-Ounce/315-Yard Skein of Yarn, Mango as a reasonable US substitute yarn, as its ball bands call for the same hook size as the DB Cashmerino Aran; Red Heart E300.0311 Super Saver Economy Yarn, White would also certainly come in tons of colors, but might require some gauge-tweaking.)

If one knows (or takes the time to determine) one's gauge with granny squares made in other hook sizes, one could easily scale these designs up or down to create larger or smaller projects (f.ex., I could easily see making most of these designs as charity afghans for groups like Project Linus). I would also suggest using graph paper and colored pencils to work up modifications of the book's color graph patterns if one wants to alter the overall shape of a project (f.ex., from rectangle to square or vice versa). The author does provide helpful tips in back on how to determine one's gauge, estimate yarn requirements, and join all of those motifs to create a FO.

The one thing that somewhat bothers me is that specific yarn requirements are only given for some of the suggested projects. (A no-crocheting-required way to guesstimate yarn requirements for the other projects would be to find a project in the book using similarly-sized squares which does give the yarn requirements and divide the number of squares in each color by the number of yarn balls called for in that color, and apply that ratio to the squares of each color in the desired project. To get yarn requirements in a substituted yarn, go to the YarnSub website; the yardage/meterage per ball will be a more important number to know than the grams per ball.)

Despite these quibbles, this book is a keeper for me, as I can definitely find tons of inspiration for future crochet projects in its pages.
