Cheaper (and maybe better than) a Therapist

Though not a fan of his astrological writings for Vanity Fair, this book is mind-blowing. I have had it for over 20 years (even had it rebound at Kinkos). It has truly helped me reinterpret the motivation of countless people in my life in a way that's helped me improve those relationships. It's a book like no other in the way it helps me make sense of other people's actions by understanding their point of view (haven't read his new book yet).

All the love letters from the "Sex and the City" movie and more!

I have seen the "Sex and the City" movie several times. This book has all the love letters that Carrie and Big read each other in the movie. It looks to me like the book that Carrie reads in bed. Maybe the book was just inspired by the movie, which came out the same day. Either way, this book is very beautiful and romantic.

I especially enjoyed learning the details of each writer's life. It's amazing how passionate some of our greatest leaders really were. I also love the illustrations, which make me feel like I'm going back in time.

My favorite letter was from John Keats, who (I learned from reading the book) died from consumption at the tender age of 26. While separated from his true love in his dying days, he wrote:

"You could not step or move an eyelid but it would shoot to my heart--I am greedy of you--Do not think of any thing but me. Do not live as if I was not existing--Do not forget me--But have I any right to say you forget me? Perhaps you think of me all day.

"Have I any right to wish you to be unhappy for me? You would forgive me for wishing it, if you knew the extreme passion I have that you should love me--and for you to love me as I do you, you must think of no one but me, much less write that sentence. Yesterday and this morning I have been haunted with a sweet vision--

"I have seen you the whole time in your shepherdess dress. How my senses have ached at it! How my heart has been devoted to it! How my eyes have been full of tears at it! Indeed I think a real Love is enough to occupy the widest heart--Your going to town alone, when I heard of it was a shock to me--yet I expected it--promise me you will not for some time, till I get better. Promise me this and fill the paper full of the most endearing names."

Less letters, poorly put together and full of errors. Buy a different edition!

I have so far had 3 different editions of Love Letters of Great Men, this being the second and possibly the worst. It appears to be the most popular which is why I bought it but I can't understand why so many people would put up with something which is obviously rushed and clumsily put together. Just look at the contents for a start - why are some names only listed with a surname - Shelley, Goethe, Kafka etc and others have their full names - George Bernard Shaw? The Index is even worse with some authors listed by their first name! And why don't the contents match up with what is actually in the book?! And the spelling, don't even get me started - it's Edgar Allan Poe not Edgar Allen Poe! It's shambolic. Didn't anyone even do a basic proofread before sending it to the printers? And what's with the Vincent van Gogh letter being in there? The only existing letter was written to his brother after he had just been rejected by his cousin. This is the entire thing:
Life has become very dear to me, and I am very glad that I love. My life and my love are one. "But you are faced with a `no, never never'" is your reply. My answer to that is, "Old boy, for the present I look upon that `no, never never' as a block of ice which I press to my heart to thaw."
This is not a love letter! If it is then also in this book should be all of the magnificent letters which great men have written to their friends, friends of their loved ones, the family of their loved ones, their own family members, future mothers and fathers-in-law, letters asking for permission to marry their love, letters expressing their love not to the person they actually love but to other people! And Lewis Carroll? Ewww all of those letters were written to children! The rest of the letters are the same from book to book but this one has even less so there is nothing special about this book than any of the other editions. In fact the other editions are better. If like me you would rather get something well made than done in a rush choose one of the others! I have reviewed 3 now, the first one I received as a present was edited by Ursula Doyle, it appears to be the most popular one in the UK. The most recent I bought is a more recent edition and has a lot more letters and information in it. There is no editor given but it is published by English Rose Publishing. It has a lot of letters which aren't in other editions and has over twice as many letters in, is better edited, put together and has obviously had a lot more effort put into it whereas this and the Doyle one seem really rushed and clumsy. I suppose both these resulted from the Sex and the City film so that's why they were rushed, actually looking at the publication dates now they both came out within a month of the film. The publishers must have raked it in!

About the Author
Xinran was born in Beijing in 1958 and was a successful journalist and radio presenter in China. In 1997 she moved to London where she began work on her seminal book about Chinese women: The Good Women of China. She writes a regular column for the Guardian newspaper.

Too much fiction, too little fact

I am definitely a fan of Xinran's writing. I was hooked with The Good Women of China and also found Sky Burial to be beautifully written. I was so excited for this book as I live in China and have worked with migrant workers in the past. I was very disappointed with Miss Chopsticks as I feel that the author could have done a bit more research into the lives of her subjects.

Having worked with migrant workers in China for 2 years, the stories portrayed by sisters Three, Five and Six are hardly the reality for migrant worker women in today's China. The reality that I see are harsh living conditions, 12-15 hour work days with no career ladder, very limited days off, and owners and managers who treat there pets and fancy cars better than their workers. The three sisters in the book seem to be living and working in their dream jobs in a dream world. It was very difficult to swallow when what I see in everyday life is completely opposite.

I wish Xinran would have included more fact into her work of fiction and depicted the persecution and discrimination that today's migrant woman faces. It's those life experiences that really makes these chopsticks, roof beams.

'A handful of chopsticks and no roofbeam'

I read this novel in one sitting last night: I could not put it down. Xinran has written a delightful novel about three sisters from rural China who make their own lives in Nanjing.

Sisters Three, Five and Six may not have much formal education, but they know that their mother is a failure because she has produced only six daughters (chopsticks) and no son (roofbeam). Chopsticks (girls) are seen as less valued than roofbeams (sons) for a number of different traditional cultural reasons, and a family without sons has far less face (standing).

Sisters Three, Five and Six have different skills and aptitudes and each is able to find a valuable niche in the city, acquire new knowledge and to bring face to their family. Each sister makes a new and different life in Nanjing, and each is valued. They each learn as well that not all learning is without some pain or grief.

But the ultimate message is one of hope for a different future. In the words of their father:'Is it possible that our chopstick girls will be able to hold up the roof'?

This novel has been translated beautifully into English by Esther Tyldesley.

Highly recommended.

An eye-opener for a bignose

Xinran's charming story of three sisters is peppered with folk sayings and maternal cautions. Even though "the first pig to get fat is the first one to find itself on the table," the third-born daughter of the Li family (called Three) decides to leave the village and try her fortune in the big city. Anything rather than marry the unappealing husband her parents have chosen for her.

Three's father is so unhappy about having six daughters and no sons that they are named simply after their birth order. Girls, after all, are mere chopsticks, whereas boys are roofbeams. Without a son Li Zhongguo has no one to hold up his house.

Through the kindness of city people (like the Tofu Lady), Three finds a job quickly. She does so well working at The Happy Fool restaurant that two of her sisters (Five and Six) follow her to Nanjing.

Five is illiterate and considered the ugliest and stupidest girl in the village. Six is a bookworm, the only girl in the village to have finished middle school. The experiences of Three, Five and Six in their rather unusual jobs make lively reading. The sisters are beautifully portrayed, and there are lots of other delightful characters besides.

This novel gives a fascinating picture of the new entrepreneurial China, as seen through the eyes of naive country girls who have never used porcelain toilets, ridden in a car or encountered a bignose (Caucasian) in person.

Even though the plot goes a bit flat at the end, all in all I found the book as fresh and piquant as the vegetables in The Happy Fool restaurant.

My Favorite 3D Printing Book, Period!

This is by far my favorite 3D printing book I have read in the past 4 years! I decided to try this book because it had useful info on 3D printing and 3 different types of modeling software. The trouble shooting section was a real life savor. This book covers everything and helped me a lot when I couldn't figure out how to fix my prints. I'm not very tech savvy and found other books harder to follow. I found this book the easiest to understand. I highly recommend it.

A practical guide to get you started safely in 3D printing.

Well written and organized, this book will definitely help you get started. The early chapters give you a good feel for the current state of 3D printing, especially the hardware for the tinkerer. I frankly thought that maybe I should wait a couple of years until it evolves to plug and play. But then I'm at that age that I don't buy green bananas. So I kept reading, joined the Tinkercad community cited in the book and already have a couple of files ready to print. Bottom line, this book tells you how to get started safely and effectively, pointing out all the pitfalls for the beginner. Of course, now I'll have to come up with bucks to get the printer!
